How To Remove Minwax Stain Blotches From Wood Floors: Step By Step Process Of Removing Minwax Stain Blotches

Step By Step Process Of Removing Minwax Stain Blotches From Wood Floors

If you are looking to apply any of the Minwax manufactures staining product to the hardwood flooring, then it is extremely important to perform a blotch test on a spare piece of flooring, otherwise, you may find yourself in trouble. Once your floor gets affected by pigment stain blotches, then there is only one option i.e, re-sanding the floor, in order to get rid of these pigment stain blotches. Oxalic acid bleach may be helpful in lightening them somewhat, however, they won't go away completely. If you are not in favour of sanding the floor again, and you withstand darkening the color, you can attempt spraying dye stain or, after sealing the wood, you can opt for glazing by adding pigment to the finish. Both of these procedures should blend the blotches, which in turn will provide more uniform color.
  1. Ventilate The Room: First of all, it is important to work in the area that is fully ventilated, so ventilate the area first where you are going to work. Combine or put together a dye that matches the stain with a suitable solvent, usually alcohol. Read or go through the instructions on the dye bottle when it comes to mixing, however, usually, the more dye you add, the darker the color will be. You may need a very dark dye in order to hide severe blotching, on the other hand, a light dye hides light blotching.
  2. Spray The Dye Solution: Now, take a 1-gallon garden sprayer & pour the dye solution into it, pump the sprayer, and then start spraying the dye under pressure. Allow it to soak into the wood, but make sure not to wipe it off. Seal the floor with the help of a sanding sealer or clear finish mixed with solvent when the dye dries. Sand the floor with the help of a floor buffer and 120-grit sanding screen as soon as the sealer dries, then vacuum it.
  3. Add Pigment To The Second Coat Of Finish: Next, you need to add pigment to the second coat of finish in order to darken or brighten the color and make it more uniform. The amount of pigment you add is entirely dependent on how dark you are looking to make the floor in order to hide the blotches. Test the finish on a spare floor board before applying it on the floor with the help of a floor finish applicator.
  4. Sand Each Coat Of Finish Lightly: Now, add pigment to the next coat of finish in order to provide more color uniformity, if needed. You can put or spread as many toner coats as needed. After that, sand each coat gently with the help of a floor buffer and 120-grit sanding screen before you apply the next coat. Apply a final coat of clear finish without pigment. This coat will help prevent the color coats from chipping away.
  5. Sand The Floor: Finally, sand the floor with the help of a drum sanding machine, an edger and 80-grit sandpaper in order to get rid of the blotchy stain completely, if you intend to start over. Sand again, but this time with the help of 100-grit paper, then brush a wood conditioner onto the floor in order to prevent the stain from blotching again. Minwax will help make a wood conditioning product that works with its stains.
