Two Easy Methods For Removing Cloudy Film From Wood Table

The cloudy film can be caused by exposure to sunlight, a cloudy finish on the table is also caused by mixing different types of cleaners as well as polishes. Using the cleaners that soften the surface of the wax is the main reason for the cloudy film. Placing the hot items on the wooden table, and having moisture in the air can result in the wax losing to its shine. Removing the cloudy film and applying it with a fresh layer will help to get the table shining again.

Method 1: Mineral Spirits

  1. It is a good idea to give the wooden tabletop a thorough cleaning with a solution of wax-cutting detergent or by soaking a clean and soft rag in the mineral spirits.
  2. Wipe down the cloudy film with the help of a cloth, wipe in the long strokes in the grain of the wood direction. The wax finish will start to look like hazy as well as dull as it is being removed. Work in small sections and if in case there is a large area of cloudiness, then it needs to be removed.
  3. After that dry the area using a separate clean and soft rag.
  4. Now it is important to repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 for at least 2 times on the same section, with the help of a clean rag each time so that the wax is removed, and not just spreading around.
  5. Continue the procedure of Step 1 to the 4 until the entire cloudy film of the wooden table has been cleaned with mineral spirits, then dry with a clean rag.
  6. If some cloudy spots are hazier than the others, then the user may need the extra cleaning power of lemon oil, cigarette ash or the walnut meat. After the cloudy film is gone, apply a coat of furniture polish or the wax that will restore the finish.

Method 2: Clean, Soft Rags

  1. Clear all the items from the top of the wooden table like clutter that may be placed on it.
  2. The second step is to plug-in the clothes iron into an electrical socket near the table. Leave it to heat until it warms, but not fully hot, before moving to the next step.
  3. Place a large square of the linen cloth flat on the tabletop.
  4. Before moving ahead test on a small area of the cloth with the iron. Iron the cloth, make several sweeps as well as the passes with the iron. Check under the linen cloth to determine the cloudy film buildup condition. If it is decreasing as well as there is no damage to the surface of the wood table, then continue the process of ironing the linen cloth on top of the wood until the entire surface of the table is covered.
  5. Follow up by applying a light polish, or the other wood furniture conditioner as desired.

Important Tips

  • Do not use any type of the rag or any material that may scratch the finish underneath the wax, like paper towels or bath towels
