How To Remove Bifold Door Pivot: Step By Step Process Of Removing Bifold Door Pivot

Step By Step Process And Items Needed For Removing Bifold Door Pivot

The bifold doors provide an alternative to traditional doors in areas where the door-opening space is limited. The metal pivots secure the fixed side of your door at the top & bottom, while the movable portion appends from a track at the top of your door frame. When the folding doors are opened or closed then the movable side slides sideways toward the fixed side & folds at its hinge points in the middle of your door. If you want to remove the bifold door pivot then you just need to gather all the required items and follow the step by step process. Here are the list of required items and steps for this process:

Things Needed

  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Straight Screwdriver
  • Needle-Nose Pliers

Steps For This Process

  • First of all, you need to open your folding door so that you can easily grasp both halves of your hinged door together, like a sandwich. Reach up to the top door pivot bracket and then release the locking lever, if there is one.
  • The next step is to position yourself where you can pick your folded doors up slenderly to get the bottom pivot pin out of the bottom pivot bracket.
  • If it won't come out then you need to rotate the pin, which is specially threaded for letting you adjust the height of your door. You should also be able to do this by your hand, but if not then you need to use needle-nose pliers to rotate the pin until it will come out of the pivot bracket.
  • Now you need to move the bottom of your doors, so the bottom pin is no longer over the bottom pivot bracket & lowers it slenderly so that the top pivot pin & guide pivots come out from the guide attached to your top door jamb. You may also need to tilt your door & work it around a bit to fall them free.
  • Finally, you need to remove the top guide & pivot assembly by simply unscrewing them. Your assembly may need to use either a Phillips or a flat screwdriver, depending on the make & model of the bifold doors. You need to remove the bottom pivot in the same manner as you do before. Leave this hardware in place if you want to put your doors back up.

Useful Tips

  • To repair & reuse your doors, you just need to remove damaged pivot pins with the help of a screwdriver. Fix worn & enlarged pivot pinholes by using a dowel rod that is inserted into the pivot pinhole. Cut off your dowel rod with the help of a utility knife so it is flush with the top of your door. Also, glue your dowel rod in place by using carpenter’s glue and let the applied adhesive dry.
  • You can also replace damaged pivot pins on the top & bottom of your bifold doors with kits available at your nearby hardware & home improvement stores. Simply drill a new & smaller hole for each pivot pin in your door on either side of your glued dowel rod.
