It is easy to remove a door from the doorjamb, simply by pulling the pin & lift the door off its hinges but you will face difficulty you have painted over the door hinge, leaving layers of paint accumulating over the pin & when rust builds up around the steel hinge pin which is locking it in place but if you want to remove the hinge pin by yourself then you need to follow the given steps. Here are the steps now:
  • Step 1: First of all you need to cut away any paint from the top of your hinge pin using the sharp utility knife. Conscientiously slide the blade through with the paint in the thin space betwixt the top of the pin & the top of the hinge plate. Set your knife aside.
  • Step 2: Now, hold a screwdriver at the base of the hinge pin & tap it with the help of a hammer to pry the pin head from the hinge.
  • Step 3: Next, spray a lubricating (silicone) spray over the moving parts of your hinge pin as well as into the top part of your hinge around the pin. Wait for at least 10 to 15 minutes for the spray to infiltrate the hinge.
  • Step 4: Close your door to take some of the weight off the hinge. Tap the bottom of the hinge pin with help of a hammer & screwdriver to pop up the pin.
  • Step 5: If the hinge pin still won't budge then remove the hinge from your door by unscrewing both hinge plates from your door & the doorjamb. Fill a stainless steel saucepan with 2 or 3 cups of water & enough baking powder to cover the bottom of the pan.
  • Step 6: Heat up to a low simmer. Saturate the entire hinge under the water without stirring up the baking soda. Cook the hinge for for at least 15 minutes or until you can see that the paint peeling off from the metal.
  • Step 7: Lift the hinge pin from the hot water with a pair of tongs. Remove any loose paint with the help of a clean rag & dry the hinge. Let it cool so you can handle it safely.
  • Step 8: Tap the pin out of hinge by using the screwdriver placed at the base of the pin & tapping it by a hammer.
  • Step 9: Spray the moving parts with a silicone lubricant & screw it back in place. Slide the hinge pin back in place & close the door.
