Best And The Easy Way To Reinforce Dining Room Chairs

Usually the weak points on dining room chairs are joints, where the dowels or spindles connect with the seat or the legs. This mostly happens when the glue fails, and the joints gets loosen. If the user don't do something about this, the chair could fall apart while someone is sitting on it. Fixing up the loose joints are not difficult, but it needs to take the chair out of use for a few days, the best way to reinforce the chair is mentioned below:

Disassembling The Chair

The only best and reliable way to strengthen loose joints on a dining room chair is to disassemble the chair and then re-glue them. The users need to remember that driving screws used to hold the loose joints is not a good idea. If incase the several joints are loose, then it's best to take the whole chair apart. Most of the joints will separate by simply tapping them using a rubber mallet. If any joint doesn't comeout then don't force it as it may break the wood. Expose the joints to steam as this will help to soften the glue without causing too much swelling.

Re-Gluing

  1. Clean: It's very important to clean off all the old glue before going for reassembling a joint.
  2. Sanding: Remove the old glue with a piece of 120-grit sandpaper or with a rotary tool, while sanding the user needs to be careful not to remove any wood.
  3. Dry-Fitting: After the sanding is done go for the dry-fitting as this will help to ensure that the joint pieces fit well in place.
  4. Apply Glue: Now after the above step is done then its time to apply glue to the spindle and then insert it in the mortise and with a bar clamp hold the joint together but wide enough to span an adjacent pair of legs.
  5. Clamp: At the same time the user can also clamp all the leg braces simply by wrapping a strap around the legs of the chair. When repairing the chair back, it is important to use a bar clamp, so that it will hold the top of the back to the seat strongly.
