Proper Way Of Refurbishing A Nightstand

The nightstand is one of the important furniture pieces in the bedroom that is mostly used at night beside the bed, it is the ideal place to keep the books that the user has been reading or can get used as a coffee table as well. If you have a nightstand at your home and you want to refurbish it, you can do so easily. Simply go through all the steps mentioned below carefully:
  1. Cleaning: The first step is to thoroughly clean the nightstand before the user begins the sanding as well as the stripping process. The user can use the dishwashing liquid that is made to cut through grease and the grime. Besides that, it is the best alternative to expensive store-bought cleaners. Wipe all the nightstand with the dishwashing detergent.
  2. Sanding: Once the above step is done then its time for sanding. While sanding the top, sides or any flat areas, use a power sander. It is very important to remove all the traces of the previous finish, especially in case if the user plans to stain the nightstand. Keep some of the sandpaper on hand for the smaller places where the sander can’t reach. Begin with the sanding process with 100-grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain.
  3. Stripper: If the nightstand has any carvings, grooves or crevices, that time use a chemical stripper. For vertical surfaces, the gel works best due to the fact that it will adhere better than a thinner liquid. To remove stubborn areas of the old finish use the steel wool, and wipe the piece down using the mineral spirits. Always be sure to wear proper safety gears and when using these chemicals.
  4. Sanding Again: In order to get the best finish, it’s very important to remove all of the previous finish from the nightstand. Once the nightstand is stripped to raw wood, then sand again using 220-grit sandpaper for a uniformly smooth surface, after that take a tack cloth to remove the dust from the area.
  5. Paint: There are a number of different types of paint and finishes to choose from. The oil-based paint gives a hard as well as durable finish, but it is harder to clean up and also messy to use. On the other hand, latex paint dries fast and is resistant to cracking and is available in different gloss options. The paint also has its own finish as there is no need to add the lacquers or polyurethanes. For the best results apply two coats, and if the user wants to save steps then apply the paint that contains a primer unit.
  6. Stain Option: It also offer a variety of different options. The user can choose from the oil-based, water-based, gel and one-step stain/finish option as well. Apply the stain, then wipe off the excess stain with the help of a rag. If there is too much stain on the nightstand, it will remain tacky or take a longer time to dry. For the darker color, apply more than one coat and always be sure to follow the direction of the grain.
