The laminate is actually made from the plastic that has the wood grains printed, this is the reason that the traditional finish meant for the wood will not work in the laminate. However, the steps to refinish the laminate tabletop are mentioned below:
- Cleaning Solution: The first step is to make a cleaning solution by mixing the few inches of clean warm water with a few drops of dish soap in a plastic container, mix the solution well until the dish soap is diluted in the water.
- Wipe: The next step is to wipe down the tabletop with the solution using the soft rag dipped in the solution, this step will remove any dirt, grime and other oils on the surface, after that dry the surface with the clean dry rag.
- Sanding: Now the user needs to sand the surface lightly so that the finish will adhere to it better, it is advisable not to over sand that can permanently damage the laminate surface. Once the sanding is completed then wipe the tabletop with the tack cloth to remove all the sanding dust and any fine debris.
- Finish: Now its time to apply the finish like polyurethane, simply open the can of the polyurethane stir well with the stir stick do not shake the can as it brings the bubbles to the finish.
- Apply: With the help of the paintbrush apply the finish to the tabletop, just dip the brush in the finish and don't saturate, apply the finish in the thin coat and use the back and forth motion for the even strokes, in order to smooth out the finish use the tip of the brush.
- Another Coat: Allow the first coat to dry completely before going for another coat in the same manner, the user needs to apply the coats until the desired results are obtained.
