Step By Step Process Of Refinishing Kitchen Chairs & Table

Refinishing is a process of giving your old furniture piece, including kitchen chairs & table, a fresh new look and make it look attractive. You can refinish your kitchen table at home yourself if you are knowing the exact way of doing this job. The most important thing to know is that select the stain color keeping the style of the table in view as well as the wood tones in your house. If you want to refinish your table and give it a new fresh look, then you first need to collect certain tools required for the process and then follow the step by step process carefully:

Materials And Tools Required

  • Stain & Polyurethane
  • 100-, 150- And 220-Grit Sandpaper
  • Stain Brushes, Rags & Tack Cloth
  • Orbital Or Belt Sander (Optional)
  • Router (Optional)

Step By Step Process

  1. Firstly, start the process by sanding the entire table in order to get rid of the stains from edges as well as legs. If in case you are using an orbital or belt sander, then make sure not to gouge the surface. Initially use 100-grit sandpaper & then move further using 150-grit & then finally use 220-grit in order to smooth out the grain for extraordinary finish.
  2. After the sanding is done, now with the help of a tack cloth, you need to eliminate all the dust which occurred due to the sanding process.
  3. After that, using a brush, you need to apply stain but make sure to apply according to the wood grain's direction. Apply the stain in a generous manner allowing it to rinse for some time & then wipe the excess stain if any. Longer the time stain takes to sit before wiping, the darker the color will be.
  4. Then, apply nearly two more coats of stain, which totally depends on the depth as well as the richness of the color. If desired, you can also apply a few more coats of stain. Now, smoothly sand with the help of a 220 grit sandpaper & then cleanse using tack cloths. Staining the wood makes the wood fibers to expand as they rinse up the stain. One of the main reasons to sand between coats is to jolt down the expanded fibers in order to maintain a smooth surface.
  5. Finally, as soon as the final stain coat is dried off completely, apply polyurethane & make sure to go through the manufacturer's directions of applying the polyurethane. As you know that dining tables are used regularly & therefore apply at least 4 coats of polyurethane. Give the polyurethane on the table at least 24 hours to dry completely before using the table again.
