Cheapest Way to Refinish Hardwood Floors

The refinishing process of hardwood floors is a bit expensive when the old finish is sanded off rather the user can go for chemical etching technique in order to make the process an inexpensive and the cheapest. The steps to refinish hardwood floors in the cheapest way are as follows;
  1. Gather Required Tools & Materials: Before refinishing hardwood floors, it is necessary for the user to gather all the tools and materials required for the process at one place. The step will help the user in running the refinishing process smoothly without going for the last minute shopping trip. The tools required for the process are shop vacuum, paintbrush, paint tray, bucket, hairdryer, paint pad, shoe covers, sponge mop, broom handle, and an artist's brush. Besides that, the materials required for the process are painter's tape, oil-based stain, nylon abrasive pad, and floor refinishing kit.
  2. Clean The Flooring: The refinishing process begins with cleaning the entire hardwood flooring. First, the user needs to clear all the furniture from the flooring and then vacuum the dust out of it followed by a wipe down with a damp cloth. The heating ducts in the hardwood flooring should be plugged with old towels and the baseboards should be protected with painter’s tape. Besides that, the user needs to turn the fans off and close all the room windows in order to limit dust.
  3. Use Chemical Etcher: Once the flooring is clean & dry, the user needs to apply chemical etcher over the flooring and scrub it well with an abrasive pad. It has been recommended to apply and scrub the chemical etcher section by section for effective results. Also, the user needs to scrub the flooring in the direction of the wood grain by applying firm pressure. Besides that, the excess chemical etcher must be wiped up from each section before working over the next section. The chemical etcher must be allowed to dry for least 30 minutes or as per the label instructions.
  4. Re-Clean The Flooring: The next step will be to re-clean the flooring with a damp mop containing dishwashing liquid and a water solution. The step will help the user to neutralize chemical etcher. It has been recommended to wear shoe covers during the re-cleaning process. Once the flooring is re-cleaned, the user needs to let it dry for least 30 minutes before proceeding further.
  5. Repair Scratches: After that, the user needs to repair flooring scratches with a stain touch-up. The hair dryer should be used to dry the stain touch-up before applying a light coat of finish over it using a brush. It is necessary to dry the finish coat over the stain before proceeding to the next step.
  6. Apply New Finish: The last step in the process will be to apply a new finish over the hardwood flooring. First, the user needs to apply the finish to the edges and corners of the hardwood flooring with a paint pad and follow that up by applying the finish to the entire flooring with an applicator. It has been recommended to apply the finish in the direction of the wood grain and work from the farthest end of the flooring towards the exit. The puddles and drips of finish must be smoothened out immediately with a polyester brush. The new finish should be allowed to dry for least 3 hours before applying the second optional coat of finish.
