Steps To Refinish A Wood Deck That Is Already Painted

In order to refinish a wood deck that has been already painted, the user needs to follow certain steps which are mentioned below:
  1. Remove Furniture: The first step is to remove all the furniture from the deck, clear the deck surface and the railing.
  2. Clean: The next step is to sweep the deck to remove all the dust, debris and grime.
  3. Repairs: Now the user has to make a visual check of any repair like popped nails, loose screws, warped, rotted, areas that require sanding. Accordingly fix the problem.
  4. Tape Areas: Once the repair job is done the next step is to tape the areas where refinishing is not required, use the masking tape or any other option to cover up the area.
  5. Scrub The Deck: Prepare a solution of one cup of trisodium phosphate in one gallon of water and mix well. Then with the help of the scrub brush start scrubbing the stairs and floor using the solution, after that attach the brush to the long handle and scrub the floor. The scrubbing will help to open the pores of the wood, so that the finish will adhere to the surface better.
  6. Rinse: Now the step is to rinse the floor with the water using a garden hose. In case of the water-based stain the user can apply that even if the deck is damp, but in case of the oil based the deck should be completely dry.
  7. Apply The Finish To Railings: Now dip the paint brush in the new finish and brush off the excess, then start applying the paint to railings but remember to apply the thin coat of the finish.
  8. Refinish The Deck: After the finish is completed on the Railings the next step is to attach the best quality roller to the frame and start coating the deck in the even coats, it is best to apply the finish in the directions of the wood grains. For the areas where the roller can't reach use the brush. Refinish the stairs also./li>
  9. Avoid Lap Marks: For the best results avoid the lap marks and work at small section at a time to avoid the uneven finish.
  10. Coats: In order to apply the second coat read the manufacturers instructions carefully because some finish needs to apply another coat when it is still wet. At last, allow the deck to dry completely before using again.
