How To Refinish A Coffee Table Without Sanding: Two Parts To Apply New Finish To Coffee Table

Two Parts For Refinishing A Coffee Table Without Sanding

Refinishing a coffee table, whether it is a thrift-store find or an old piece at homes, can bring it back to life. The easy way to refinish a coffee table without sanding is shown below with two parts:

Part 1: Removing Old Finish Without Sanding

  1. Remove: The first step is to remove all the existing finish using the wax wash remover. Simply spray the wax wash remover and then wipe it off with the help of a cloth. If working inside its important to some of the windows for good ventilation.
  2. Marker: Once the above step is done then its time to touch up the scratches as well as all the worn edges with the help of a touch-up marker.
  3. Deep Gouges: In case of the deep gouges use the quick fill burn-in stick that will help to fill the deep gouges in the table.
  4. Wax Wash Remover: Atlast apply the wax wash remover again to clean the table one more time before moving on to staining.

Part 2: Applying A New Finish

  1. Furniture Oil: Finish off the coffee table using furniture oil for the natural look of the wood. Use a natural furniture oil, such as tung oil, teak oil, or danish oil as well, with the help of a clean cloth. Carefully rub the oil into the coffee table with the help of a cloth, going in the directions of grain, continue the process until the oil is applied to all the bare wood. Leave the coffee table to dry overnight, then apply the second coat of oil as this will help to bring out the colors of the wood more effectively. Teak oil is well suited for denser woods like mahogany, maple, or oak. Whereas the tung oil, as well as danish oil, work well for all types of woods, like softwoods such as pine and cedar.
  2. Darker Wood Finish: If the user wants a darker or simply a different-colored wood finish that time stain the coffee table. Apply a coat of the wood stain of your choice with the help of a 4-inch paintbrush but make sure to apply the stain in the long as well as smooth strokes but going with the direction of the grain. Wipe off all the excess stain using a clean cloth, after that let the stain to dry.
  3. Varnish: For a clear protective finish apply the varnish. With the help of a 4-inch paintbrush apply a polyurethane wood varnish of your choice again in the directions of grains and using long and straight strokes to apply an even coat all over the surface of the coffee table. Let the stain dry completely and your coffee table is refinished.
