Two Easy Parts & Items Needed To Refinish The Coffee Table

By refinishing the coffee table the users can bring the life back to the table so that it will look good in the house. In order to refinish the table, the users need to start by sanding down the pre-existing finish and then clean up the sanding dust so as to expose the bare wood of the coffee table. Then after that, they need to apply the finish and the users can easily refinish the table at home by gathering the below-mentioned items and then following the below-described procedure:

  • Mineral Spirit & Sandpapers
  • Electric Sander & Furniture Oil

Part I- Sanding Down The Pre-existing Finish

  • Step 1: The users need to place the drop sheet beneath the coffee table but they are advised to work in the well-ventilated area like the garage. The drop sheets protect the floor from the paint or varnish spills. If in case the users are not having a good working area or the drop sheets then they need to lay down 3 overlapped newspaper layer or they can personally make their drop sheet from the plastic bags.
  • Step 2: Then they need to clean up the coffee table surface by making a solution of the water and the soap in the small-sized bucket. Then soak the soft cloth in this solution and then run it over the entire surface of the coffee table. The users are advised to clean the coffee tables well so that there won't be any dust stains.
  • Step 3: Once the coffee table is dried off completely the users are advised to use the fine-grit sandpaper so as to remove the pre-existing finish. The users can also use the electric sander for sanding purposes and keep on sanding till the bare wood of the coffee table is exposed. Before proceeding towards the sanding process the users are advised to wear the mask and the goggles so as to protect their mouth, eyes, and nose from breathing in the harmful dust particles that can affect the lungs. For the hard areas where the electric sander won't reach the users are advised to rub the sandpaper at that area by hand.
  • Step 4: Once the users have sanded down the old finish from the coffee table then they need to clean up all the sanding dust from the surface of the coffee table by using the soft clean cloth as this will help the users to see the exposed wood and will also get the idea whether to continue with the sanding process or not.
  • Step 5: The users may need to continue the sanding process for one more time followed by the cleaning process as well. Then use the mineral spirit and apply it over the surface of the coffee table so as to get rid of the all-wood dust particles.

Part II- Applying The New Finish

  • Step 1: If the users want to make their coffee table look natural then they need to finish their coffee table by using the furniture oil. Apply the oil by using the clean cloth and then rub the oil-soaked cloth over the entire surface of the coffee table and then let the first coat of the furniture oil to get dried off completely for one complete night. Then after that, they need to apply the second coat accordingly if the users want to bring more wood colors to the furniture item. The furniture oil usually adds the natural glow to any wood item.
  • Step 2: If the users want to attain a darker finish to the coffee table then they need to stain their coffee table or they can also apply the different toned wood finish. They need to apply the first layer of the wood stain to the entire surface of the coffee table by using the soft-bristled brush. The users are advised to apply the stain within the grain direction and then clean up the unneeded stain by using any soft cloth and then allow the stain to get dried off completely. If the users are still not satisfied with the darker finish then they need to add 2 more layers of the wood stain once the first layer of the stain is dried off. The users are advised to let the second layer of stain to get dried off before applying the third layer.
  • Step 3: If the users want to attain a clean finish on their coffee table then they can apply the varnish over the entire surface of the coffee table. They need to follow the grain direction and apply the varnish in the even coats and then allow it to get dried off completely. The users can also apply another layer of the varnish if they want to add more shine and glam to their coffee table. The varnish is also available in matte and the glossy shades so that the users can choose whether they want a shiny or a natural finish.
  • Step 4: If the users want a totally different color on their coffee table then they are advised to directly paint their coffee table. They can apply the latex build primer to the entire surface of the coffee table by using the soft paintbrush and then let it get dried off completely for almost 1 hour. Then over the primer layer, the users can apply their choice and then allow the paint to get dried off completely for almost 8 hours and then they need to check if they still see some primer layer within the paint then at that time they need to apply another coat of the paint respectively. The users can also use the oil-based paint for their coffee table but they need to keep this thing in mind that the oil-based paints took longer time to get dried off and while the later paints only took less than the 3 hours to get dried off. The users can also apply the two different color tones over the coffee table surface like they can paint the top surface with the blue color and the legs of the coffee table with a light blue color.
