Step 1: Preparing The Table

Step 2: Sanding

Start the sanding process on the table with the help of 60-grit sandpaper. If in case an electric sander is available, then you can use it in order to assist in speeding up this process, otherwise, only use a block sander. Then with the help of a damp rag cleanse any sawdust. Test the surface of the table & find the rest of the scratches and stains, if any. If you feel that sanding needs to be done again, then go for it using the 60-grit sandpaper. Again wipe off the table using a moist piece of cloth to get rid of all the sawdust. Again sand the table surface, but this time with 80-grit sandpaper & keep on sanding until the surface is perfectly smooth. Sponge off all the dust from the table with a damp rag. Then give the table some time to dry completely.

Step 3: Staining

Now, with the help of a clean rag, spread the stain. Cleanse in one direction along the grain of the wood. But make it absolutely sure to wrap the tabletop completely and equally. It will take nearly 24 hours to dry completely, so don't rush & be patient. Examine the table surface for the stain whether it is even or not before applying the polyurethane. If in case you need to even out some spots, then go over them.

Step 4: Polyurethaning

Use a durable polyurethane like Diamond Varathane, due to the reason that this kind of finish is particularly used on floors for extra-strong protection. This finish will hold up to a lot of use. Rub the polyurethane on the table in one long motion. Make sure to perform this along the direction of the grain of the wood. Keep spreading the polyurethane in a thin, even coat. The first coat will take nearly 24 hours to dry completely, so wait for the said time duration. Abuse the polyurethane a little by sanding slightly with 100-grit sandpaper. Cleanse off all the polyurethane dust with the help of a slightly damp piece of cloth. Wrap the table with another polyurethane coat. Continue the sanding process and spread polyurethane until you are satisfied with the look of your table. Affix at least three to four coats of polyurethane for extra protection for your tabletop.
