You can easily roll your furniture around the room as required. If in case your floors are rough, then at that time, getting caster wheels with a locking mechanism is a very good option so that your furniture only moves when you intend it to. Gather the required items first before gong through the process of attaching caster wheels on a metal chair:

Items Needed

  • Measuring Tape
  • Strong Adhesive
  • Drill Bits
  • 4 To 6 Screw-On Casters
  • Scrap Wood, Various Thicknesses
  • Screws
  • 4 to 6 Post Casters And Receiving Cylinders
  • Screwdriver

Step 1: Build Up The Corners

As you know the majority of the furniture is assemble-it-yourself in the modern era, there will frequently be no additional support at the corners as you will find in craftsman-made furniture. Therefore, firstly, build up the corners before putting on the wheels. This can be done by simply adding pieces of scrap wood to each corner with the help of screws or glue.
  1. Calculate the depth of the leg or toe-kick in order to determine how much of the caster you want to come through beyond it. Account for the collection of your carpet so that the furniture's rolling is not paused by the base edge getting caught on the carpet.
  2. You can attach the decorative caster or an industrial ambiance with the screw-on type. Both these types are available in both "extravagant" and less intrusive variations.
  3. Trim the pieces of scrap wood, in order to hold your selected caster and sturdy enough to let your caster wheel to come through the right distance and fix them into the corners of the furniture.
  4. If in case you are using a post caster, this built-up portion requires to be deep enough for the receiving cylinder, and for the screw-on type, there should be extra wood surrounding the flange so that the screws won't break out the sides.
  5. Moreover, if in case the base of the furniture is flat, make sure the rim of the screw-on caster is within limits from the edges that the screws don't break out the sides.

Step 2: Add The Casters

  1. First of all, drill the post holes before fixing the receiving cylinders inside them ap per the manufacturer's directions. After that, put each post caster into the cylinder as long as it "locks."
  2. For screw-on types, pre-drill screw holes for the caster rim and fix each rim smoothly. Then, tilt the furniture facing upward but make sure not to put all its weight on the new casters while tilting it.
  3. Keep in mind, when you are moving heavy furniture, keep your hands at about the midpoint in order to prevent overbalancing.

Types Of Casters

  • Post Casters: A post caster wheel is attached into the base of the metal chair leg or corner. Generally, these types of casters are more decorative as compared to other kinds of casters, having either a metallic ball or a covered cylindrical rolling element. You will mostly get these types of casters as replacement parts, without the receiving cylinders. You can't just drill a hole in order to receive the post as long as the receiving cylinder has a "catch" to take hold of the caster in place, so the cylinder pieces are needed. These types of casters let the furniture to be rolled in any direction.
  • Screw-on Casters: A uniform plate holding the caster mechanism is secured onto the furniture base using this type of caster. These are generally less decorative and more functional, using plain rubber wheels on the inner part of a metal housing. These types of casters can be fixed, swivel, & locked in place. The swiveling kind among other types is the most flexible, due to the reason, that it lets the furniture to move in any direction.
