How To Protect Fiberglass Door From Sun: Different Ways Of Protecting Fiberglass Door From Sun Damage

Different Ways Of Protecting Fiberglass Door From Sun Damage

Fiberglass doors have a much higher resistance to weathering in comparison to wood or steel, which in turn means they require less maintenance. In spite of the fact that fiberglass doors are less prone or susceptible to rust, rot, as well as warping, however, exposure to sunlight can cause fading of the colors. Overhangs can help safeguard your door from swift finish deterioration, but, if you have already suffered the repercussions, then you will have to refinish or patch up the surface. If you are looking to protect the fiberglass door from sun damage, then perform one of the following ways:

Way 1: Cleaning

Cleaning your fiberglass door is one of the best ways when it comes to protecting them from sun damage. You need to clean your door properly before painting or staining the surface. If you paint or stain the door surface without properly cleaning the door, then it could prevent the paint or stain from binding to the surface, which in turn reduces its lifespan. Apply a non-sudsing cleaner in order to prepare the surface, with the help of a sponge. As soon as you get rid of any loose particles, it is important to dry off the door with the help of a clean rag.

Way 2: Refinishing

  • If you find that your fiberglass door has excessive fading, then refinishing your door can be the best option. In order to get rid of the old, faded finish, you need to apply a thin layer of water-based stripper before waiting for nearly an hour.
  • Apply the following layers, repeating this process as long as the finish begins to loosen, before scrapping it off with the help of a putty knife.
  • If the surface is uneven, you need to firmly & gently sand it with the help of 120-grit sandpaper. Make sure not to sand the door to a greater degree in order to prevent releasing fiberglass particles into the air.
  • As soon as you are done getting rid of the finish, clean the entire surface with the help of a rag dipped in denatured alcohol. After that, apply a layer of gel stain with the help of a natural bristled paintbrush.
  • This is the most important element when it comes to keeping the door from fading. As soon as the gel stain dries, you need to apply at a minimum two layers of fiberglass topcoat, & then wait for it to dry between coats.

Way 3: Use Acrylics

Exterior acrylics are considered more resistant to ultraviolet light in comparison to the majority of other paints and are designed to remain undamaged or unaffected by weathering, making them an ideal choice for fiberglass doors. Due to the reason that acrylics have a long lifespan, they are mostly used for painting road signs. You can easily apply exterior acrylics over gel stain, however, it is necessary to prime the surface first. Use a roller in order to apply at a minimum of two coats of exterior acrylic primer to the door. With the help of a natural bristled paintbrush, apply the paint over the primer. It is important to remember that dark colors will take in or soak up more heat, which in turn could cause warping.

Way 4: Patching

Gel stain is thick that won’t flow when you apply it to fiberglass. Like acrylic paint, gel stain can be used to make small improvements to the appearance or finish of the faded areas. Apply the paint or gel stain with the help of a small, natural bristled paintbrush. Use a color that exactly matches or complements your fiberglass as accurately as possible. Due to the fact that fading is usually quite subtle, you will probably only need one thin layer, it may dry a different color as compared to how it looks when wet, therefore, it is important to wait before applying a second or third coat.
