At the time of applying the finish to the furniture, it is important to be extremely careful in order to make sure not to create bubbles in the finish. If, for any reason, the bubbles occur during the refinishing process, then it will create blemishes on the surface, which in turn crack when dried, causing the finish to begin peeling. Therefore, it becomes necessary to prevent bubbles from occurring in the finish. In order to prevent bubbles from taking place during refinishing your wood furniture, go through the below-mentioned steps carefully & achieve the desired result of your work:
- Wipe Down The Surface Of The Wood: First of all, clean the surface of the wood with the help of a damp rag & get rid of any dust or debris that can become trapped by the finish, which as a result causes bubbling to occur.
- Stir The Polyurethane Gently: Now, smoothly stir the polyurethane with the help of a stirring stick. Make sure not to shake the can, due to the reason that this will create air bubbles in the polyurethane, which then ends up arriving on the furniture.
- Dip The Brush Into The Polyurethane: Next, soak one inch of the brush into the polyurethane and let it sink into the bristles for a minute. If in case you find out too much stain on the brush when you get rid of it, smoothly run the brush in opposition to the side of the can to remove the excess. Don't tap it. If you are using oil-based polyurethane, then use a natural-bristle brush, due to the reason that synthetic brushes can create air bubbles.
- Apply Polyurethane To The Furniture: After that, start spreading the polyurethane to the furniture using smooth, slow, even strokes. Move the brush in one direction, making sure not to move it back and forth.
- Apply More Coats Of Polyurethane: Spread the polyurethane with the help of a rag rather than a brush as an alternative. The rag will help remove air bubbles that can be created by the brush. The only negative aspect of this method is that the stain must be thinned first so that you can apply more coats than you do using a brush. To thin the polyurethane, you need to pour an insignificant amount into a clean bucket. Pour the polyurethane into the bucket slowly in order to prevent bubbles from forming and take note of the amount you pour. Take a bucket & put on an equal amount of mineral spirits or naptha so that it is a 50-50 mix of polyurethane stain as well as a thinning material. Stir the mixture slowly with the help of a stirring stick.
- Sand Any Bumps Or Blemishes: Finally, sand any bumps or blemishes from the surface of the furniture by wet-sanding the piece using 400-grit sandpaper secured to a sanding block. Soak the sandpaper into the water and spread a light amount of pressure to the sanding block, just enough to get rid of the blemishes. Use a circular motion when you sand the wood.
