  • 2 Inch (5.1 cm) Paint Brush
  • Water-Based Primer (Optional)
  • Acrylic Latex Paint (Optional)
  • Plastic Paint (optional)

Priming And Painting The Wood Shutters

After collecting all the items, now you need to follow all the given steps:
  1. In order to paint your wood shutters, you need to apply the water-based primer to the surface of the shutter with the help of a paintbrush(2 inches). Dip your paintbrush into the primer can & scrape off the extra primer to avert brush dripping. You need to paint according to the wood grain along with each slat of your shutter & the frame by using smooth & even & forth strokes.
  2. Next, you need to allow the applied primer to dry wholly for at least 3 hours. This will ensure that the primer is fully cured so the paint will go evenly & smooth.
  3. Then you need to paint wooden shutters with the help of acrylic latex paint by using your paintbrush(2 inches or 5.1 cm). You need to paint carefully along the top, side & all bottom edges of your shutter frame first, then you need to paint the other surfaces of your wood shutter frame. Brush your acrylic paint onto each slat next, start your work from the top of your shutters, with slow & long strokes. Always paint according to the wood grain & smooth out any drips or runs.
  4. Apply plastic paint to plastic or vinyl shutters with a 2 inch (5.1 cm) paintbrush. Cover the top, side, and bottom edges of the frame first using long, smooth strokes. Paint around the rest of the frame using long, even strokes next. Finish by painting the slats, starting at the top and working your way down.
  5. Now you need to open & close your louvers after you paint them if possible. Use the handle on the front of your shutters to open & close your louvers for 2-3 times before the paint dries. This step will make you sure that there is no paint that will dry & cause your slats to stick well together.
  6. After that, you need to paint the other side of your wood shutters after 30 minutes. The previously applied paint will be dry after 30 minutes, so flip your shutters over on your drop cloth after 30 minutes. Simply paint the other side of your wood shutters, start your work from the frame, then move on to the other slats & work from the top down.
  7. Finally you need to allow your wood shutters to dry for a whole night before installing them. Wait until the next day to install your wood shutters to give the applied paint time to cure fully. This will ensure you don’t unintentionally mess up any parts of your applied paint topcoat during installation.
