Step By Step Process Of Painting Rusted Metal Louvered Doors

Louvered doors allow free passage of air even if the door is closed. These types of doors have rows of horizontal strips that permits air circulation. Some of the louvers are movable, however, metal doors usually have fixed or immovable louvers. Any defect in the paint, like all over the screw holes or where paint is scratched, lets moisture to wear away the underlying metal. Remove the door from its hinges or tracks and then take off all the hardware before repairing the finish with new paint. In order to paint rusted metal louvered doors, go through the below-mentioned steps carefully & achieve the desired result of your work:
- Lay The Door: First of all, place the door on a pair of sawhorses or drop cloth outdoors. Clean or brighten the rusty spots with the help of a wire brush. Toothbrush-size wire brush can help you reach into tight spaces. Turn the door over in order to clean all sides.
- Scour The Door: The next step is to scour the whole door with the help of a steel wool or fine-grit sandpaper, making the surface dull and getting rid of small traces of rust left behind after brushing.
- Liquid Dish Detergent: Now, take a bucket of warm water & add 3 to 4 drops of liquid dish detergent to this warm water. Then, rub and clean the door by applying this solution on all sides with the help a scrub brush.
- Wash Out The Detergent: After that, wash out the detergent with the help of a garden hose or bucketfuls of clean water, and then allow the door to dry rigorously. Shake a spray can of rust-inhibiting, enamel paint primer, before popping off the cap.
- Spray Paint Primer: Take hold of the can nozzle near about 12 inches from the surface, and spray a light & even coat into cracks, seams as well as all over the louvers. After the first coat dries fully, put or spread a second coat to the same areas.
- Turn The Door: Tilt the door to the opposite side, and sprinkle two coats of primer over the seams, cracks and on every side of the louvers, allowing the first coat to dry & then apply the second coat.
- Spray More Primer: Spread a light, even coat of primer on top of the side of the door that faces up with the help of a steady, side-to-side motion. Sprinkle more primer through the edges of the door. Make the first coat dry completely & then apply the second coat of primer.
- Dry The Primer: Allow the primer to dry rigorously & then turn the door over and apply two coats of primer to the opposite side.
- Rust-inhibiting, Spray Enamel Paint: Shake as well as open a can of rust-inhibiting, spray enamel paint. Apply three light, even coats of paint on inaccessible areas on every side of the louvers, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Tilt the door over, and continue with the same process on the opposite side.
- Dry The Enamel Paint: Sprinkle three coats of paint over the upward-facing side of the door as well as through the sides, using the same light, sweeping motion. Before applying another coat, allow each coat of enamel dry. Turn the door over, and continue with the same process on the opposite side.
