How To Paint On Embossed Wall Paper: Step By Step Process Of Painting On Embossed Wall Paper

Step By Step Process Of Painting On Embossed Wall Paper

Removing wallpaper is not an easy task to do, however, if you don't like the color of the wallpaper & you don't either want to change the texture of your embossed wallpaper, then the only option you have is to paint over it & retain the embossed appearance of the wallpaper. Preparing the paper is one of the key factors, due to the fact that the paint will show imperfections including peeling paper and can even make the peeling of poor quality or a low standard by adding moisture to the already weak seal. As soon as you make sure that the seal is secure, you can safely paint the embossed wallpaper. Go through the below-mentioned step by step process carefully in order to paint on embossed wallpaper:

Step 1: Fix Any Blemishes

First of all, you need to check the wallpaper for peeling edges or corners. Cut away peeling paper with the help of a utility knife before applying a thin layer of joint compound over the area using a putty knife. Allow the joint compound to dry completely before you start sanding it, however, make sure not to sand the surrounding wallpaper. You can use an adhesive when it comes to reattaching any peeling wallpaper or detached corners.

Step 2: Clean The Wallpaper

Now, vacuum the wallpaper with the help of a dusting brush attachment or dust it well using a hand duster. After vacuuming the wallpaper, it is time to start painting over textured wallpaper. Dust can gather or accumulate on the raised edges of the wallpaper design, which in turn can prevent the paint from sticking well.

Step 3: Install Painter's Tape & Apply A Primer

Next, tape off baseboards, corners and those areas that you don't want to paint using painter's tape. Paint the wall by applying an oil-based interior bonding primer, with the help of a paint roller having a heavy nap in order to lay paint evenly across the textured surface. The oil-based primer is best due to the fact that it won't soak into the paper like latex can, and it help cover stains better than latex primer. The surfaces that are not primed are more vulnerable or prone to peeling and cracking. Use a paintbrush in order to cut in the edges. Clean the roller with the help of mineral spirits.

Step 4: Wait For The Primer To Dry

Allow the primer to dry for near about 24 hours before painting over textured wallpaper. Oil-based primer dries slower in comparison to latex primer, therefore, it is important to give it plenty of time in order to get completely dry before applying the paint color.

Step 5: Add A Base Coat Of Paint

After that, paint the wall using latex paint, with the help of a heavy-nap roller. In spite of the fact that some people prefer to use oil-based paint over oil-based primer, still the bonding primers will allow you more flexibility to use different types of paint. Latex paint is usually cheaper in comparison to oil-based paint and is easier to use, for instance, you can clean the brushes using water rather than mineral spirits. Allow the paint to dry entirely. Note: Open all windows as well as doors when painting.

Step 6: Apply A Second Coat Of Paint

Add a second coat of paint, if needed. Or, in order to make the embossing stand out, you can also mix one part glaze with three parts paint, either using the same paint color as the base coat or a lighter color, then use a 4-inch, light-nap paint roller in order to spread the glaze over the wall. The light nap puts down more paint on the raised areas of the texture gently or carefully. Blot away excess paint before glazing in the recessed areas with the help of a dry foam paintbrush.
