How To Paint Hollow Core Interior Doors: Painting A Hollow Core Interior Flat & Paneled Door

Painting A Hollow Core Interior Flat & Paneled Door

Even if it's a minor adjustment, a newly painted inside door can completely transform the appearance of your house. You can decide to paint the door an accent color to enhance the personality of a space or choose to apply a fresh coat of paint to restore a faded or damaged surface. Plan to paint doors last because they serve as the home's entrance and exit points so that the paint finishes are not disturbed and have enough time to completely dry. If you take a look around your house, you may observe that the surfaces of the doors vary considerably: some are entirely flat, while others have paneling or elaborate molding. The method used to paint these door designs also varies a little. (Painting an external door also calls for particular attention.) Use these professional pointers to paint an interior door, whether it is flat or paneled.

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Screwdriver
  • Medium-Grit Sanding Sponge
  • Tack Cloth & Drop Cloth
  • Paint & Paintbrush
  • 4-Inch Paint Roller
  • Painters Tape, As Needed

Painting A Hollow Core Interior Flat Door

  • Sand The Door Surface
Sand the door's surface first after removing the door's hardware. For the cleanest outcome, you need to paint on a flat, level surface. Sanding will also remove any existing paint or coating from the door, improving the surface's ability to hold paint. We kept it simple by using a sanding block instead of an electric sander, but you are free to do the same. Use a tack cloth to remove dust once the surface has been made smooth.
  • Paint The Interior Door's Edge
When painting a flat inside door, start at the inner hinge edge and move in one direction around the door. Start from the inside bottom and work your way up, across the header, and down the striker side. For more control in this tiny spot, use a brush. Additionally, take care not to put too much paint on your brush at once. Drip marks are caused by excess paint.
  • Paint The Flat Interior Door
The inside door's smooth surface should then be painted. Using a 4-inch closed-end foam roller, apply the paint. Run two or three roller widths across the door face and the entire height. Lay off the finish by brushing from bottom to top with a lightly loaded brush or, if preferred, a lightly coated tiny roller to erase any lines. Using this method, the roller may swiftly and evenly apply paint to the surface while maintaining a wet edge and producing a smooth finish. Dry off.

Painting A Hollow Core Interior Paneled Door

  • Sand The Door
Painting a flat inside door is similar to painting a paneled interior door. Remove the doorknob and all other hardware as well. Similar to sanding a flat door, you should sand the door's surface. To have more control close to the intricate edges and corners of the paneled door, we advise using a sanding block. When the surface is smooth, use a tack cloth to clean up the dust.
  • Paint The Panels Of The Door
Beginning with the upper-left panel and working your way down the door face in sequences, paint each panel. Paint the panel edges using a paintbrush first on each panel. Since this will all be painted over, it is acceptable to paint a little outside the lines. Utilizing a 4-inch roller, fill the center of the panels once the edges have been lined.
  • Paint The Stiles Of The Door
Paint the stiles in between the panels once all of the panels have been painted. Paint the horizontal panels after finishing the central vertical stiles. The two remaining outermost vertical spans of your internal door should be painted to complete painting the surface.
  • Paint Edges Of Interior Paneled Door
Paint the interior door's edge lastly. As you paint, avoid any runs or sags. After letting the paint dry, lightly sand it before adding a second layer. Install the door and new hardware after they have dried.
