  1. First of all, unscrew your slatted closet door from its hinges using a screwdriver, if it is already hung up.
  2. Disassemble all the two folds of your door from each other by removing your hinges in the middle because this will also keep your hinges paint-free, and this is a better method than covering them with tape.
  3. Wash your doors with some soap & water to remove all the dirt and dry them off with the help of rags.
  4. Now you need to lay a plastic sheet out in your yard. This plastic sheet will protect the grass from spills and also from paint splatter. Painting farther will keep you from dealing with fumes inside.
  5. Now you need to sand down any rough areas on door wood with the help of fine-grit sandpaper(220). Now fill all the holes by using the wood putty and then let the putty dry for a few hours. Once dry, now sand the applied wood putty smooth to the surface of your closet door.
  6. Now wipe your doors down by using a slenderly damp rag after the sanding process and then let them dry for 15-20 minutes.
  7. Paint your closet doors with primer. Dab your brush in all the corners of the slats to coat them and then simply paint the length of your slats in a motion called side to side following the grain of the wood. Once you've painted all the slats, now primer the outer frame of your door which holds the slats.
  8. Follow the grain, commonly, the wood grain of your frame on the sides is up & down, but also runs side to side at the bottom & top. Also, paint primer on all the edges of your closet door. Once done, let your door dry and then flip it over & do this with the other side.
  9. Paint your closet door after you've covered it in the primer on both sides. Paint in the same way as you do before with the primer. Let each side dry earlier painting on the other side.
  10. This is your final step, you need to use enamel paint so that your closet door can be scrubbed clean when this paint gets dirty. Reinstall your closet doors when they dry.
