The weathered look is famous as the distressing furniture method. The distressing technique is used to give an old and damaged look to the furniture that is mostly used in clothes like denim jeans. The distressed furniture looks great and gives an antique look to the home. Here are some of the easy and simple steps to paint & distress wood furniture along with the items needed for the procedure. Just follow the given steps carefully.

Items Needed

  1. Sandpaper.
  2. Paint.
  3. Paint brushes or Rollers.
  4. Polyurethane.
  5. Steel wool.
  6. Rags or tack cloths.
  7. Drop cloths.
  8. Candle.

Steps

  1. Prepare: The first step to paint and distress the wood furniture is to prepare the furniture to lay down drop cloth on the working area. Remove any hardware like handles and other pieces and keep them in safe area to attach them later.
  2. Sand: After preparing the furniture now start sanding the surface of the furniture with small grit sandpaper(60-80). The sandpaper will make the surface smooth and perfect for distressing technique.
  3. Clean: Now clean the wood furniture with a rag or with the tack cloth to remove dust and dirt from furniture. Vacuum cleaner can also do this work.
  4. Paint: Use flat latex paint for best results of distressing. Paint the furniture with a paintbrush or with paint roller. Paint roller can cover more area than paint brush. Let the paint dry for approximately 6-7 hours.
  5. Apply Wax: Apply some wax of candle at the top of the furniture. Rub the candle on the spots, edges and on the corners. Apply a second coat of paint on the wax affected area.
  6. Distress The Furniture: After applying the wax on furniture now use steel wool or sandpaper to start distressing. Distress some area of edges and corners of the furniture. Wipe any dust and dirt after finishing the distressing method.
  7. Apply A Stain: Now apply a thin layer of wood stain on the furniture. Use paint brush and apply stain on the edges and corners carefully and let the stain dry for nearly 8-9 hours.
  8. Polyurethane: For extra protection of furniture apply some polyurethane. Polyurethane will seal the furniture and will protect the color and finish of the furniture.
