Proper Procedure Of Painting Aluminum Siding

The aluminum siding is known for its all-weather durability, it is a long-lasting outside home facade that will require very little maintenance. Maybe after some time, the owner will notice the paint is peeling or the home looks a little outdated. Then they can easily paint the aluminum siding, the proper procedure of painting aluminum siding is shown below:

Cleaning

Start the process with cleaning the slate as this helps the primer and the paint to stick to the siding strongly. Besides that, it will also help in getting a smooth finish. Most of the owners have found that their aluminum siding has a chalky finish and they try dusting its surface. Over time, the dirt, as well as grime, also collect on the siding.
  • Cleaner: Use a cleaner that is specially designed for aluminum siding, but the owner can also use a mixture of trisodium phosphate (TSP) with the water, it works just as well.
  • Directions: Follow the directions on the TSP solution package to mix the cleaner correctly as different solution has different methods. The owner can also add a cup of chlorine bleach to the solution if the siding also has mildew growth on it.
  • Apply: For a small house, the owner can wash the siding using a sponge or scrub brush with the hand, but for big size house, use the mixture with a pressure washer to clean up the surface faster.
  • Rinse: After the above step is done then rinse the siding using the clean water, and let it dry completely before moving on to priming and painting process.

Repairing

A coat of paint will help to give the house a new look, but it will not cover up any blemishes on the siding. If there is any peeling paint, then scrape it to make the siding surface smooth. Blend in the scraped areas by gently sanding the edges. If in case the section has more damage, that time replace it with a new section of the same aluminum siding. Wash the areas where the repair is done before proceeding.

Right Timing

Perform the painting job on a day that is mild and overcast. Hot as well as cold temperatures affect how quickly the paint will dry, which will interfere with how well the paint sticks to the siding. Most of the latex paint will not cure unless the temperature is above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, besides that some products are made in a way to work in colder temperatures. Direct sunlight can affect the drying time of the paint. Avoid the days with weather elements like the wind as well as rain that can ruin the paint job badly.

Applying The Primer

  • Choosing Primer: Choosing the right primer is the base for a smooth coat of paint. Primer is available in both latex as well as oil-based form. While the owner can use both, but the oil-based primer tends to work better on aluminum. The latex primer can make a chemical reaction with the aluminum which will form small gas bubbles. With the span of time, the bubbles can show the paint to bubble and flake. So, choose a primer that is made for metal for the best results.
  • Apply: After choosing the right primer, apply on the surface with the help of a paintbrush or a roller. Use a paintbrush to reach small areas. Let the primer to dry fully before painting.

Painting

  • Choosing The Paint: The exterior acrylic latex paint is best suited to work on aluminum siding. Choose a paint meant for metal. Flat or satin finish paint is best for aluminum siding. A finish having the gloss can draw more attention towards the dents as well as other blemishes in the siding. So the lower the shine, the finish will hide the flaws better.
  • Apply The Paint: Apply the paint with the help of a paintbrush or a roller. Again a brush works best for small areas like in corners and near the trim. At least, apply two coats of paint to get better coverage. It is important to let each coat of the paint to dry fully before applying the next coat.
