How To Paint A Wall To Look Like Wood Planks: Easy Methods To Make Walls Look Like Natural Wood

Easy Methods To Make Walls Look Like Natural Wood

If you are looking to create a wooden wall effect, then one of the best & simplest method is to place or fix wood planks or paneling to the wall, however, this is not possible at all times, because of lease restrictions, budgetary constraints or design parameters. When you are planning to create a faux finish, the best way is to start from the original. Before trying to make your walls look like wood, you have to determine which wood you would like to imitate and find a sample of the wood in order to use it as a visual reference.

Paint

  • Wood graining is considered as one of the principals of faux finishing. You can apply wood grain to nearly any surface, which includes walls as well.
  • Start the process by selecting three colors from your sample. Choose the main color of the wood, the darkest color represented as well as the lightest color. Purchase semi-gloss latex paint in all three colors.
  • Soak a medium/wide brush first into the main, or base color, then the dark, & finally the highlight. Apply the resulting paint onto the wall using brush in long vertical strokes.
  • Continue painting as long as the entire surface is covered with wood grain color streaks. Work over this base using a smaller brush adding grain with the light as well as dark colors, using your sample as inspiration.

Stain

  • Prime the wall with the help of a neutral tan paint. Use a water-based gel stain in order to dry brush a coat of light colored stain over the wall, make sure never wet more than 1/4 inch of the end of your brush.
  • Drag the brush quickly by applying light pressure in order to create vertical streaks across the surface.
  • Allow this to dry before going back over the wall with a second, darker color of stain, using the same method to create a wood grain effect.

Wallpaper

  • There are a huge range of wood grain wallpapers, self-adhesive as well as decorative paper coverings that you can apply to walls. Apply your paper in the usual manner, & make sure to read & go through the manufacturer's instructions for best results.
  • Cut paper in order to fit around the edges as well as cover the entire wall in the wood grain paper. Permit the adhesive to dry. Combine or put together a medium brown color of water-based stain with nearly half water and brush it over the fixed wallpaper as an antiquing wash.
  • This, in turn, will help give the finish more depth as well as cover the photographic feel of the image. Finally, permit it to dry.

Bamboo

  • You can buy bamboo screens in a huge range of sizes. For an affordable bamboo wall covering, search for cheap bamboo beach mats that you will get online from novelty suppliers, party supply stores or even dollar stores.
  • Roll out the mats and cut off any piping around the edges with the help of a utility knife. Staple the mats to the wall, adjoining or meeting the edges up to each other in order to create a rough wood texture.
  • Cut mats to fit around obstructions with the help of a jigsaw or a handheld cutting tool. Trim out the wall using wood trim or you can use split bamboo to continue the theme.
