Two Easy Parts, Steps & Items Needed To Paint A Screen Door

The users can easily paint the metal as well as the screen doors, all they need is to purchase the paint, primer, and paintbrushes as well. In order to get started the users need to start by cleaning the entire surface by using the cleaning solution and then apply the primer layer and then allow the primer layer to get dried off completely. The users can easily paint the screen door at home by gathering the below-mentioned materials and then following the below-described parts with steps:

Materials Required

  • Household Cleaner
  • Paintbrushes & Sponge
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Bucket
  • Paint & Primer

Part I- Cleaning & Priming Up The Door

  • Opening The Screen Door: Start by opening the screen door by unfastening its internal hinges or using the chair item so as to keep the screen door open. By doing so the users can easily approach the side corners and this will prevent the paint from incidentally getting over the front door and their entryway as well.
  • Make The Cleaner Mixture: Then they need to clean up their door surface by using the sponge and the household cleaner and to do so they need to pour the 2 cups of the household cleaner in the small-sized bucket and then soak the sponge in the cleaner mixture and then rub the sponge over the entire surface of the screen door. The users are advised to rub the sponge in the round motions so as to grab up the extra grime.
  • Repair The Holes: Then they need to repair up the holes if in case they are painting down the wooden door and they need to use the putty knife and the spackling compound so as to fill up the holes. The users can also use the epoxy wood filler so as to fill up the deep holes. Start by directly applying the compound to the holes and spread it over the surface by using the putty knife.
  • Use The Painter's Tape: The users need to protect the areas that they do not want to apply the paint by using the painter's tape and to do so they need to trim the painter's tape piece and then stick it over those spots like the doorknob and the door hinges. The users can also lay the drop cloth or the newspaper so as to help in catching up the paint drips.
  • Wear The Mask: Then they need to put the mask or the ventilator as the fumes of the paint can be very harsh and it is very important to protect themselves from the fumes. Then they need to wear the mask while priming, sanding and then painting the screen door.
  • Use The Sandpaper: Then they need to sand down the entire surface of the screen door by using the high grit sandpaper so as to smoothen up the rough or the uneven areas. The users can also use the sanding sponge for the sanding process and then wipe down all the sanding dust by using the damp cloth so as to get rid of the dust.
  • Apply The Primer: Then they need to apply the layer of the primer over the entire surface of the screen door before applying the paint layer. The users are advised to purchase the oil-build primer for the wooden doors or the metal-safe primer to get applied for the steel doors. Start applying the primer from the top surface of the door and then move the paintbrush to the downward area of the door accordingly. Once the primer is applied the users then need to allow the primer to get dried off completely for almost three hours.

Part II- Applying The Paint

  • Purchase The Paint: Start by purchasing the multipurpose paint for their screen door as it is very necessary to use the paint that is specifically built for creating the special surface over the screen doors. The users can purchase this kind of paint at their nearby home stores or at some online sites as well.
  • Apply The Paint: Then they need to soak their paintbrush or the paint roller into the paint container and then apply it directly over the entire surface of the screen door. The users are advised to apply the paint in the circular motions and avoid the back and the forth motion. Then allow the paint layer to get dried off completely for almost two hours before applying the additional paint coats.
  • Detach The Painter's Tape: Once the paint is dried then the users need to detach the pieces of the painter's tape and then allow the paint to get dried off for almost one day.
