How To Paint A Metal Porch Swing: Step By Step Instructions For Painting A Metal Porch Swing

Step By Step Instructions For Painting A Metal Porch Swing

A metal porch swing is a kind of swing that is typically composed of wrought iron, which is considered to be very resistant and can last for a longer time period if maintained properly. The metal swings are not vulnerable or susceptible to mildew, cracking, or other connected problems, unlike wooden porch swings. However, it is extremely important to maintain & protect the metal porch swings against rust and make sure to paint them at regular intervals. People generally tend to avoid painting metal, but you can paint it provided you use the proper products and follow a few simple steps.

Tools And Materials Needed

  • Protective Sheets
  • Sandpaper
  • Rust Remover
  • Soft Steel Wire Brush
  • Anti-Corrosive Metal Primer
  • Disposable Brushes For Metal Primer
  • Metal Paint & Paint Brushes

Step 1: Find A Place To Paint

First of all, you need to take your metal swing porch to a well-ventilated area, if possible. It is important that the painting area should protect the swing from rain as well as other factors which could interfere with drying, for example, dust accumulation. Put down some protective sheets or newspapers underneath the swing, due to the reason that this will help safeguard the surrounding area from drops of paint.

Step 2: Clean The Metal Swing

Now, scrub the metal surface with the help of a soft steel brush and sandpaper. This, in turn, will help get rid of the old paint and part of the rust. Steel brushes have numerous degrees of stiffness, making it very important to select a softer brush, otherwise, it may scratch the surface. However, the brush needs to be hard enough so that it can clean the debris on the surface.

Step 3: Remove Rust

With the help of a wire brush, now, you can apply a product in order to get rid of the rust. There are different types of chemicals you can find in the market which can be used to get rid of the rust. Some of these have to be applied with the help of a brush, while others can be sprayed on the surface. Allow the rust remover to act for a period of time in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions before removing it. Some of the rust remover products need brushing as well as further cleaning using sandpaper. When you are done with the cleaning, rinse the surface, before wiping it and allow it to dry for at least 12 hours.

Step 4: Apply The Primer

Using disposable brushes, you can apply the primer to the entire surface. The types of primer that you can use include some anti-corrosive latex or oil-based primer. Allow the primer to dry entirely. Primer might lose the wet appearance before it gets completely dry. Therefore, it is highly suggested that you wait for nearly 24 hours just to ensure that the process is completed. Typically, one layer of primer is sufficient, however, if you want to be completely satisfied that your metal porch swing is protected against any future corrosion, then you can apply an additional coat.

Step 5: Apply The Paint

Finally, with the help of fine brushes, you can apply the paint to the surface. Make sure to apply only thin layers and make sure not to leave any paint bubbles. Allow the swing to dry before applying the second layer. For best results, two coats have to be applied, before allowing the paint to dry completely & then you can move or use the porch swing.
