Painting down the fiberglass door is simple like painting down any other wood door but the surface preparation of this door is quite different than the rest of other doors. One of the main steps while preparing the door surface is to gently sand down the door, washing it, and detaching the metal hardware as well. Materials & Tools Required

  • Gel Stain, Clean Cloths, Paint Thinner & Paint
  • Dropcloths, Screwdriver, Wedge & Drill
  • Wood Graining Tool, Paintbrushes, Sealer & Hand Gloves

Procedure

  • Remove The Door: The users need to start by detaching the knob present within the door surface by using the flat-headed screwdriver. Then they need to place the wedge beneath the door edge so as to prevent it from falling down the moment when the users will detach the door from its hinges. They need to use the power drill or the flat-headed screwdriver so as to detach the screws that are fastening the fiberglass door within the hinges. The users are advised not to detach the screw that attaches the hinges within the frame as this will make it very easy for the users to hang the fiberglass door. Then the users need to detach the door from its frame.
  • Wrap up The Working Area: Once the users detached the door from its frame then they need to wrap up their working area by using the dropcloths. Then they need to line up the 2 horses and then lay down the door over the pair of the sawhorses. The users need to make sure that each one of the door edges will lie gently over the one sawhorse.
  • Wipe down The Door: Then they need to clean the door surface and in order to clean up the grease or any other dirty stains they need to soak up the cloth in the paint thinner can.
  • Apply The Paint Layer: Then the users need to apply the base layer over the entire surface of the door by using the foam brush of 4-inch size. In order to apply the paint to the small areas of the door, the users need to use the one-inch brush and then let the paint to get dried off completely.
  • Apply The Gel Stain Layer: Once the base coat of the paint is dried off perfectly then the users need to apply the gel stain coat over the entire panels of the door by using the foam brush of 4-inch size. In order to attain the wood grain texture the users are advised to drift down the graining tool.
  • Apply The 2nd Stain Layer: Once the first layer of the gel stain is dried completely then the users need to apply the 2nd coat of the gel stain to the entire surface of the door by using the foam brush again. Then they need to let the door to dry off completely for one more day.
  • Apply The Sealer Layer And Re-affix The Door: Finally the users need to apply the coat of the sealer to the entire door surface and then allow the sealer to get dried off completely. Then the users need to reaffix the doorknobs and then hang down the fiberglass door within its respective hinges.
