Easy Steps & Items Needed To Paint A Faux Wood Finish

If you have a faux wood finish on a furniture at your home & you want to paint the finish, in order to give it a good appearance, you can do so easily. Simply collect certain items required for the process before going through all the steps carefully:

Items Needed

  • Damp Rag, Painter's Tape & Newspaper
  • Fine-Grit Sanding Block & Tack Cloth Or Dry Rag
  • Latex Primer, Stir Stick & Paint Tray
  • Paintbrush, Latex Glaze & Faux Wood-Grain Rocker
  • Latex Paint In Two Wood-Grain Shades: One Light, One Dark

Steps

  • First of all, with the help of a damp rag, clean the faux wood piece rigorously in order to eliminate the dust as well as debris particles & then give it some time to dry completely. If in case you don't want to paint a particular section, then cover that section with the help of a painter's tape.
  • The next step is to cover the working place with the help of a newspaper in order to protect the surface from paint splatter. Then position the project piece on top of it or you can also position some of the paper around the piece if it is too large to handle easily.
  • Now, start sanding the surface with the help of a fine-grit sanding block in order to scrape up the existing finish. This in turn permits the primer to stick more easily & perfectly. Then you need to remove the dust with the help of a tack cloth or dry rag.
  • Now, it is time to pour some primer into a paint tray & then blend the primer with the help of a stir sick. Make sure to apply the primer to the entire surface from top to bottom equally, with the help of a paintbrush. If in case you are working on the plastic or laminate piece, then it will be the best option to use the plastic primer rather than the latex, due to the fact that it sticks better. Give the primer some time to dry completely & if the finish is still visible, then apply one more coat of primer.
  • Blend the first latex paint color in the brightest of the two shades. Put some of it into a paint tray and start painting the entire piece, spreading paint in equal rows rather than in random directions. This in turn will assist in making the faux wood finish look more practical. Allow the paint some time to dry completely.
  • Put some of the second latex paint colors into a paint tray after blending. Blend in a small amount of latex glaze using the quantity suggested on the glaze collection, the more the glaze, the more semi-transparent the final finish will be.
  • Spread the mixed glaze over the piece with the help of a brush, make sure to work on one surface at a time, as the top of a desk, instead of the sides as well. Commencing in one corner, slide the grain rocker tool in a straight line across the edge of the piece, rocking the tool back and forth once in a while to produce wood knots and grain variations. Cleanse additional glaze off the tool with the help of a dry rag.
  • Tilt the rocker tool next to the original commencing position, moderately converging the path you just grained. Glide it along as before, rocking the tool back and forth as frequently as intended to change the grain pattern. Keep performing the process until the entire surface has been faux grained.
  • Finally, repeat the rocking with the rest of the areas of the piece until the entire object is faux grained. Allow the piece to dry fully before holding it, glaze takes more time to dry than paint.
