4 Easy Steps Of Painting The Bathtub Yourself

If you have a bathtub in the bathroom area your home and you want to paint it and make it look nice, you can do so easily. Painting the bathtub yourself can save the user a lot of expenses, follow the steps mentioned below carefully to achieve the desired result:

Step 1: Removing The Caulk

  1. The first step is to remove the caulk with the help of a caulk-removing tool or isopropyl alcohol. Apply the isopropyl alcohol on the caulk using a spray bottle or simply blot it on the caulk with the help of an old washcloth, this will help to soften the caulk and will make it very easier to remove. Use the caulk-removing tool to remove as much of the caulk as possible.
  2. Discard all the old caulk so it will not get in the way. It is advisable to keep a garbage bag at the nearby place to easily put caulk inside. The user will not be able to reuse it for anything, so throw it.
  3. In this step the user needs to remove the drain as well as the spout so they will not get painted. With the help of a screwdriver take out the drain and the water spout fixtures as well after that set them aside. If having trouble in getting a part out, then try lubricating it with oil to loosen all the screws.

Step 2: Bleaching The Bathtub

  1. Open all the windows or bring a fan before working with bleach. If the bathroom is small and does not have a vent or the windows, that time bring in a fan to blow air out. It is very important to get the fresh air so the user isn’t breathing in bleach fumes.
  2. Wear the rubber gloves before doing the job then mix 90% water with the 10% bleach. Take a large bucket to mix-up the water as well as the bleach. It is advisable to leave some of the room at the top of the bucket so that it will not spill easily. So make sure to wear gloves as well as old clothes, too.
  3. Scrub the bathtub with the help of bleach and water solution and after that rinse it out. Take a sponge and start from one corner of the tub. Squeeze out as well as re-soak the sponge as much as needed. Rinse out the bathtub using freshwater once it is cleaned.
  4. To make sure that the tub is clean wash it with an abrasive cleaner. Sprinkle the cleaner all over the entire surface of the tub. Take a new, wet sponge for scrubbing the tub. Rinse out the sponge periodically as this way it will not get too gunky from the cleaner, and finally rinse the bathtub again using a freshwater.
  5. To remove any of the residual cleaner use acetone on a clean washcloth. Dampen a washcloth using the acetone and then wipe it down on the interior as well as the exterior of the tub. Continue to wear the gloves because the acetone can dry out or hurt the skin.

Step 3: Filling Gaps And Sanding The Tub

  1. Under this the first step is to prepare the epoxy putty to wear rubber gloves to protect the skin, and read out all the instructions of the manufacturer. Work the putty between the fingers until it will become pliable, kind of piece of playdough.
  2. Fill out any of the cracks or the chips in the tub using the epoxy putty. Use the fingers to push putty in the chipped areas. It totally depends on how large the crack is, tear out the putty pieces so the size which will overfill the area. It is important to make sure to push down the putty firmly with fingers so that it will easily make its way into all the crevices.
  3. With the help of a putty knife smooth out the patched areas. Take the putty knife and then position the blade in a way so that it is flat with the surface of the bathtub. After that gently scrape it on the filled sections as this will help to remove any excess putty. Try to wipe off the blade from time to time using a damp paper towel.
  4. After the above step is done then sand down the entire bathtub to prepare it for paint. Use wet or the dry sandpaper, and start sanding it with the help of a 400 grit sandpaper first, and start sanding again with the 600 grit sandpaper. Attach the sandpaper to a sanding block, and take a spray bottle to wet down the tub.
  5. The final step under this is to rinse out the tub as well as dry it completely before starting the painting job. Once the tub has been completely sanded, rinse out all the interior and also wipe down the exterior to remove any of the sandpaper and grit residues take clean towels to dry it.

Step 4: Applying Paint

  1. On the walls as well as on the floor tape the protective sheets. Also lay the plastic sheeting over any of the other fixtures, like on the toilet or the sink, and remove all the decorations, towels, as well as beauty products.
  2. Wear on a respirator as well as wear old clothes after the above step is done.
  3. Prepare the paint by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Incase of cast-iron or the fiberglass tub, use the acrylic urethane enamel, that is already mixed, or mix it, depending on kind of kit purchased.
  4. Load the spray gun and then coat the entire tub with the long and even motions. Continue applying until all the entire interior is painted, and then move on to the outside. Once the first coat is dry then apply a second coat.
