Easy Process Of Painting 6 Panel Doors With High Gloss Paint

A focus of attention in any space of your home draws the eye, giving balance as well as harmony. Some of the traditional focus of attention in your home may include furniture pieces, cabinetry and artwork, however, a door is another option which may be the focal point of any room in your place. High-gloss paint will help create a dynamic focus of attention but it also maximizes any surface imperfections. In order to make your door look attractive & beautiful, it is important to thoroughly prepare it for painting. Make sure not to remove the door except if you are experienced with hanging doors, which is complex and usually tricky. Instead, prep as well as paint the door in place.

Step 1: Preparation

  1. Move The Furniture Out Of The Way Of Door: First of all, take all furniture and other items out of the way of the door. Put a painter’s tarp in front of the door, & be careful not to touch the door with the tarp.
  2. Remove Any Loose Or Peeling Paint: Get rid of any loose or peeling paint with the help of a paint scraper. Wash the door, in a thorough manner, with the help of a mild solution of detergent and water.
  3. Patch Holes, Nicks & Other Imperfections: Patch holes, nicks, scratches as well as other imperfections. You will find patch kits for all types of doors at any hardware store. Allow the patching materials to dry as long as no longer tacky.
  4. Sand The Patches & Paint Drips: Sand the patches as well as any existing paint drips or runs with the help of a block sander and 180-grit sandpaper. Take your time and be extra careful in order to examine the door to find even minor problems with the existing paint. Wash away sanding dust with the help of a damp rag.

Step 2: Priming & Painting

  1. Mask The Doorknobs, Hinges & Frame: Firstly, cover or wrap the doorknob, hinges as well as frame with the help of painter’s tape. Open a can of latex primer and firmly stir it using a stir stick. Soak a paintbrush into the primer before wiping off the excess on the can’s edge.
  2. Apply Thick Paint Of Primer: Put or spread a thick coat of primer to the entire door. Change paintbrush sizes as needed in order to ensure even coverage. Make the primer dry overnight.
  3. High Gloss Latex Paint: Open a can of high-gloss latex paint and then stir firmly. It is important not to stir too hard, which introduces air bubbles. Soak a clean paintbrush into the paint before wiping off the excess on the edge of the can.
  4. Paint The Recessed Panels: Now, paint the recessed panels, starting at the top left and proceed your way across and down. Start at the center of each panel and move your way out to the faces. Paint in the direction of the grain, with even strokes.
  5. Paint The Center Stile: Next, paint the center stile, or the upright center section of the door. Start at the top and move your way down, painting in the grain's direction. Gently overlap the previously painted sections using a thin, feathering motion.
  6. Paint The Rails: Paint the rails, or the straight or parallel portions of the door. Work left to right as well as down from the top of the door. Use smooth strokes in the grain's direction and feather the paint where it meets previously painted areas.
  7. Paint The Remaining Stiles In The Grain's Direction: Paint the rest of the stiles in the grain's direction, starting at the top left side of the door and move your way out and down, feathering the paint where it joins previously painted sections. Paint the edges of the door before letting it dry for nearly 24 hours & then remove the tape.
