Moving a couch always seems to be very easy until it comes time to start the heavy lifting. Moving the couch upstairs is never fun. Bringing a couch upstairs can be a little tricky and needs to take advance planning and this is because it is so large and unwieldy. Besides that, it's also very important to move the couch safely to avoid any injuries. The important tips to lift and move a couch upstairs are mentioned below:
  • Plan: The first step is to plan down the route and clear all the path of obstructions, like toys, shoes or any other pieces of furniture that may come in the way.
  • Put On: The next step is to wear supportive shoes, like the athletic shoes, that have good traction. Besides that also put on the back brace which will support the vertebrae during the lifting process. Also, wear the gloves to protect the hands from the splinters as well as from upholstery staples.
  • Break It Down Into Parts: Detach each of the sections if in case the couch is a sectional. The user needs to remember that don’t force anything off which is not designed to detach. For instance, if there is no way to unscrew the legs from its base, that time leave them as it is instead of trying to remove them which will result in the broken couch. If in case the user removes any of the nails, screws, or other tiny parts while breaking down the couch, store them in a safe place, where they can be easily found when required.

  • Wrap It Up: Once the couch is broken down into its pieces, its time to work for wrapping them. Wrap down the cushions and pillows in plastic wrap or simply put them in a large garbage bag. If the user was able to remove the legs, then either wrap those separately or put them in the bag with the cushions. There are a couple of options for wrapping up the base of the couch. The user can use the plastic wrap around the whole couch and then cover it in the moving blanket, or skip the plastic and go right only with the blanket. Consider providing the extra protection for armrests as well as for any sharp corners by placing the cardboard over them and securing with packing tape or with the additional plastic wrap.
  • Set: Place the couch down on cardboard or on rags of the floor. After that push the couch straight to the base of the stairs.
  • Confined Areas: Move the couch through any of the confined areas. Place one person on each end, then bend down, keeping the back straight. Slightly bend at the knees and then firmly hold the couch from the bottom edge.
  • Lift The Couch: Its important to lift the couch at the same time. Walk down carefully and slowly in step with each other. If in case walking in the backward direction, look over the shoulder while walking. The person walking in a forwards direction should follow the lead and not push too fast.
  • Dolly : Onto one side tilt the couch and the bottom should face the back of a dolly. One person should hold the couch firmly while the other one will carefully wriggle the dolly under the couch's arm. Slowly lean down the couch back onto the dolly. With bungee cords or straps secure down the couch to the dolly .
  • Walk Backward: Now Walk in the backward direction up the stairs with the dolly, and rolling the wheels up but one step at a time. Set up the couch to its new location. Remove all the plastic wrap. Put the legs, cushions as well as pillows back on.
