Step By Step Procedure Of Making Shaker Cabinet Doors From Old Flat Fronts

The shaker doors of the cabinets usually reflect the traditional craftsmanship as they are very simple in appearance. The shaker doors are also termed as the inset paneled door as their doors are having the hardwood glued to it. Usually, the shaker styled door uses the three by four inches for the overlaying purpose and if in case the users are having the pre-existing door fronts then they can easily accomplish the shaker style by using the one by four-inch hardwood. The main reason behind using the one by four-inch materials is that it does not intervene with the pre-existing tolerances that are required by the hinges or for the binding and unbinding of the doors properly. The users can easily make the shaker cabinet doors from the pre-existing flat fronts at home by gathering the below-mentioned materials and then following the below-defined steps:

Materials Required

  • Drill/Driver, Hand Sanding Block, Wood Glue
  • Clamps, Paint, Orbital Sander, Miter Saw
  • Pin Nailer, Stain, Sandpaper, Hardwood Strips
  • Pin Nails And Lacquer

Procedure

  • Detach The Door: Start by detaching the doors within the frame of the cabinet by using the drill/driver. The users need to detach the hinges within the doors as well.
  • Sand The Door Front: Then the users need to place the cabinet door over the 2 sawhorses and then sand down the door front by using the orbital sander so as to detach the pre-existing lacquer finish. Then re-sand the front side of the door with the fine-grit sandpaper that is affixed with the sanding block. The users need to sand the door in a parallel way to the wood grain until they won't find that the door is smoothened properly.
  • Measure The Door Side: Then calculate the size dimensions of the door side that is parallel with the wood grain. Then the users need to use the miter saw to trim 2 pieces of the two one by four inches hardwood as per the calculated size dimension. Then apply the wood glue at the backside of both the trimmed pieces. After that, place the one trimmed piece on each of the sides flushed at the base, side, and top.
  • Shoot The Nail Pin: Then the users need to shoot the pin nail at the central one inch within the top and one inch within the base and thus they need to use the three by four inch sized pin nails for the hardwood. Then they need to place the clamps downwards on both of the sides and then allow the wood glue to get dried off completely for near about one hour.
  • Measure The Distance: Now calculate the distance in between the strips of the hardwood at the base and at the top. Then trim the one hardwood strip so as to fit in between them at the base and at the top. Then they need to apply the wood glue at the strips back and then place the one-piece flushed with the base and the other piece at the top. Then they need to shoot the nail pin within the strips and then place the clamps over them in the same way that they did with the pieces of the door sides. Then allow the wood glue to get dried off completely for almost one hour. Then the users need to detach the clamps.
  • Use the Stain Or Paint: Once the wood glue is dried off completely, the users need to sand down the edges and the door sides as well by using the fine-grit sandpaper. Then apply the lacquer, paint, or the stain so as to match with the color tone of the pre-existing cabinets.
