If you want to make floating box shelves and you are looking for the procedure then stop becaue your search ends here. You just need to collect all the required items and after that follow the given steps carefully. Here are the list of required items and steps for this proces:

Items Required

  • 2” x 10” Pine Board & Miter Saw Or Circular Saw
  • Hand Or Bench Router With A Dado Router Bit
  • 1/2” Paddle Bit
  • Drill Press (Optional) & Sandpaper (Medium Grit)
  • Cloth & Stain Or Paint
  • Polyurethane & Paintbrush
  • Adjustable Blind Shelf Floating Support Invisible Brackets
  • Pencil & Drill
  • Level

Steps For This Process

  1. First of all, you need to cut your board down to the required size & gather materials. Then you need to buy a larger piece of wood & then cut it into smaller sections by using your miter or circular saw. Undoubtedly, you need to customize the size to fit the room where you plan to hang your shelves.
  2. Next you need to notch the back of each shelf to accommodate the hardware. You need to create a notch by using a hand router so that your hardware will fit in the back of each shelf. If you use the hardware then the notch should be 1/2” deep per instructions. If you use different pieces, follow those instructions. You will need the notch back so when you hang your shelves the hardware doesn’t create a gap betwixt the wall and your shelf.
  3. Now you need to drill the holes for your hardware. If you are using a hand drill then you need to use your paddle bit in order to create holes where your hardware will slide into the proper place. The holes will be 4” deep, but follow the instructions on the hardware. If you are nervous about creating the straight holes then start them with your paddle bit & finish drilling with a drill press. By using a paddle bit will make it easier to meticulously start each hole.
  4. Sand and stain (or paint) in any well-ventilated area & all rough edges on your every shelf. Wipe off any excess sawdust, then you need to apply your favorite paint or stain. Get creative & use reclaimed wood or you can make pallet floating shelves for a weathered look. If you are going to apply the stain, be sure to wipe off extra stain & let each coat dry until you reach the desired finish. If you wanted your stained box shelves to be glossy then you need to cover with a coat of polyurethane lacquer. Let all shelf pieces dry completely.
  5. Finally, hang your shelves. Once your shelves are dry, it’s time to install your hardware. Building your own wood supports can be time-consuming and will also go horribly wrong, a lack of precision could get you to this step only to have the box shelves not fit. You need to use a level to make sure that each shelf is straight. Once the hardware is on your wall, then slip your shelves (via their drilled holes) into place.
