Method 2: Ammonia Fumes

This is the other method of making the cast iron look new, the steps are mentioned below:
  1. Measure The Size: The first step is to measure the size of the grates, this is because grates come in a variety of different sizes, and the user needs to determine what exact size bag is best for the grates. Incase the user is cleaning the grates individually, that time choose several gallon size ziplock bags or if the user wants to clean all in one bag then take a large bag(garbage) which can be properly sealed.
  2. Add The Ammonia: After getting the bag next step is to add ammonia in the bag and seal, so that the fumes will not come out of the bag. In this method the user will not use liquid ammonia to clean the Cast Iron grates. Instead they are using fumes from the ammonia build-up, that will help to loosen the grime and grit over time. It may take 3 hours to clean, but it is recommended to let the grates sit overnight.
  3. Remove: After the grates are removed from the bag then rinse it well using the warm water, this is the most efficient and widely used method for cleaning the grates. In case of the excess gunk use the fingers or a sponge to clean off.

Method 3: Coating With Baking Soda

  1. Wash: Under this method the first step is to wash out the grates using warm water. This initial wash will help to remove any surface layers, that in turn allow the baking soda to work on the tougher layers.
  2. Thick Paste: Now in this step prepare a thick paste of the baking soda with water. For the deeper cleaning the user can substitute vinegar for the water. Paste should be thick enough to coat and adhere to the grates.
  3. Coat: Apply the thick paste on all grates and let stand for about 15 to 30 minutes. This mixture will remove any excess build-up.
  4. Scrub: Now its time to scrub off all the build-up with the non-abrasive sponge and rinse thoroughly.
