Things Needed

  • Tablecloth Fabric
  • Border Fabric
  • Tape Measure
  • Scissors
  • Straight Pins
  • Sewing Machine
  • Matching Thread
  • Serger For Seam Finishing(Optional)

Steps For This Process

  • Firstly, you need to regulate the required finished size of the tablecloth. Also, find out the table's length as well as width, and then add twice the drop amount. The drop is actually the distance between the table surface & the bottom of your tablecloth hem. Consistently, the length will stop just above the lap of the seated person, which is near about 8 to 10 inches below your table surface.
  • Now you need to decide on the size of your contrasting border. Consider the pattern of your fabric & how the design will align on your cloth. As an example, a ribbon could be placed vertically or horizontally.
  • Next you need to deduct twice the required border depth and then add 1 inch to your finished cloth measurement for your main fabric cut measurements. Here is an example, with a border width of 4 inches & cloth of 80 inches wide & 100 inches long, your main measurements are 73 inches wide & 93 inches long. You need to cut your fabric to these measurements in order to allow for a 1/2-inch seam annuity that joins your border.
  • You now need to cut your border fabric width equal to the desired border width & plus 2 1/2 inches. By following this example, for a 4-inch border, you need to cut the pieces 6 1/2-inches wide.
  • Cut two pieces provided that the finished length of the cloth plus 4 inches. Cut two pieces exactly as the main fabric cut width.
  • The next thing is to start placing the right sides together, pin all the sections in the proper place & then simply sew the 73-inch width borders to your main fabric body width by using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Now, you need to remove your pins before finishing all these seams with serging or zigzagging and then simply press them away from the main body of your cloth.
  • Now it's time to place the right sides of the long border to the long edge of your tablecloth, pin the sections in place, and sew using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Remove these pins before finishing all these seams and then press them away from the main body of your cloth.
  • Finally, you need to turn the outside edge of your cloth over 1 inch twice and then gently press it. Pin in place & then edge-stitch this second fold in order to make the edge hem. Edge fasten is sewing close to the edge. Remove all the pins and then you need to iron the hem.

Important Tip

  • You need to choose border fabric with a complimentary fiber content as your tablecloth and also wash & dry both pieces to avert shrinkage later.
