Step By Step Instructions Of Making A Swag Valance

A swag window valance adds the character to any window of any room at your place. However, a swag valance can be costly and always may not fit properly with the decor or with the design of the window or with the room. Therefore, it is the best option to make a swag valance yourself. The step by step instructions of making a swag valance are mentioned below:

Step 1: Measuring Swag Valance

First of all, the important thing is to measure carefully the overall width of the opening of the window or of the curtain rods. The user needs to adjust the measurements depending on the type of material that will be used for the swag valance. If in case the user is using the particularly thick kind of the material for the valances, that time simply double the measurement as this will help a lot to allow the fullness in the design and appearance of the swag valance. On the other hand, if using any light type of the fabric, in such cases simply triple the measurements for a more elegant look.

Step 2: Measuring Fabric

After the above step is done, now the user can accurately & easily determine the total length that is required for the fabric pieces. To perform this, carefully start measuring from the opening of the top of the window or from top of the curtain rod exactly down to the bottom to the desired length of the swag valance. Then, after that keep 1 inch extra, this is for the seams as well as another few inches for the heading height that is needed over the top of the opening of the window or rod. This height will totally depend on the user's need, however, the normal height of the heading is between 2 to 4 inches. Here the important point is to ensure to add about 1 1/2 times the diameter of the curtain rod for the length of the rod pocket.

Step 3: Cutting The Fabric

In this step, the user needs to simply cut out the fabric exactly with the measurements that are done for the length of the fabric, rod pocket lengths as well as for the header heights.

Step 4: Preparing The Fabric For Sewing

Now after all the fabric pieces are cut, start preparing the fabric for the sewing. Ensure that the right sides of the cut that are done in the fabric are facing together. Next, take a measurement tape for measuring out the height of the heading right from the top edge of the fabric. Then after that include the additional one and the half-inch as well as also mark down the seams with the help of the chalk. After this, mark down the length for the measurements of the rod pockets, the important point here is to make the mark of the chalk line directly underneath the header height mark.

Step 5: Sewing The Fabric

  • With the help of the sewing machine, start stitching a one-half-inch seam right from the top of the corner of the fabric to the right pocket top. Then, start sewing out a seam right from the bottom of the pockets of the rod with the fabric bottom. Make sure to not stitch the rod pocket with itself as this will block the passage of the rod. Repeat the same process to the other side.
  • Next, use the sewing machine for stitching of the one-half-inch seam from all across the bottom of the piece of the valance. Next, flip the material from inside out as well as firmly press the seams using an iron. Ensure to flip all the edges to underneath about one half an inch for the raw edges as well as press it using a hot iron. Next place altogether the top of the edges of the lining of the fabric as well as a stitch with the sewing machine.
