How To Make A Rectangular Braided Rug: Step By Step Instructions Of Making Rectangular Braided Rug

Step By Step Instructions Of Making A Rectangular Braided Rug

If you have old sheets, clothes, and curtains, you can convert them into reusable material including a braided rug, rather than throwing them out. In spite of the fact that some of the crafters knit or crochet their braided rugs, there is no need for you to have these skills in order to make your own. By braiding the rags exactly in the same way as you'd braid hair, you will conclude with a very long strip of fabric. As soon as the braid is finished, the next step is to bend it into a round or oval rug and sew it together.

Items Needed

  • Long Strips Of Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape
  • Ruler
  • Sewing Needles
  • Thread
  • Safety Pins

Instructions

  1. First of all, trim the scrap fabric into long pieces using sharp scissors. The width of these strips should be at least 2 inches. Using a ruler, you can trim little notches at a gap of 2 inches through the edge of your fabric.
  2. Now, trim the frayed strands through the edges of each strip. After that, sew the ends of the strips with the help of a needle and thread in order to make continuous strands.
  3. As soon as you get a big pile of strips, roll them up into three equal-sized balls without connecting the ends. Withdraw the end from all three of the strip balls, pile them, and stitch them together. Pin down this edge using a safety pin to somewhere you are comfortable to work at, such as a couch, a curtain, or an ironing board.
  4. Now, it is time to edge or trim with braid and move backward as you work. When the braid gets enough extensive, pin the end to the base again and again. Braid the strips as long as you reach the length of the rug you want to make.
  5. Square Or Rectangle-shaped Rug: Make a bunch of braids that are same in length. Place the same length braids side-by-side, attach or fasten them together using pins and finally stitch them in order to keep them in place.
Oval Or Round Shaped Rug: You need very long, constant & uninterrupted braids in order to create these shapes, due to the reason that you have to twist or bend them to get an oval or circle. Twist the braid into a spiral shape, fasten it together using pins & then stitch to keep it all in place. Keep twisting and pinning, and stitch all the coils together.
  6. When you are pinning the last braid, push, fold, or turn it underneath the rug and sew it into place and now you are ready with a rectangular braided rug.
