How To Make A Dining Room Table: Steps To Make A Dining Room Table

How to Make a Dining Room Table?

Dining Table is necessary furniture that is required by almost each & every home. The steps to build a dining room table are mentioned below:

Collect All the Required Tools & Materials:

Before building a dining room table, the user needs to collect all the required tools & materials at one place i.e.
Tools Required:
Table Saw, Radial Arm Saw, Chisel, Hand Held Belt Sander, Drill or Rechargeable Screwdriver, and Pocket-Hole Jig.
Lumber Required:
The user needs to buy the lumber according to his choice in the below-given dimensions:
2'x8'x8's = 3 pieces, 4'x4'x8's = 3 pieces, 2'x12'x12's = 2 pieces, and 2'x4'x8's = 4 pieces or else the user can select his own dimensions required to make a dining room table.
Hardware Required:
It has been recommended to have the below-given hardware in spray black paint finish:
Lag screws in 3/8' x 6' size = 8 pieces, Lag screws in 3/8' x 3' size = 8 pieces, 3/8' Washers = 16 pieces, Pocket-Hole Screws in sizes 2 ½” & 1 ½” = 100 pieces each size, and Brackets = 10 pieces.

Steps To Build A Dining Room Table

  1. Draw A Guide:
The first step will be to draw a guide diagram regarding the dining room table on a piece of paper which the user needs to follow during the construction process. The lumber sizes mentioned above are ½” more on each side than the actual lumber sizes required to build a dining table or else the user can make a diagram according to his dimensioned lumber. The experts recommend making diagrams from each angle by which the user will get an idea that how he can make each joint and cut.
  2. Cut The Wood:
After the diagram to construct a dining table is complete, the user needs to cut the wood accordingly either cutting the wood by self or getting help from the guys at the hardware store. It has been recommended to label each piece of the wood separately so that the user doesn't get confused later on while constructing the dining table.
  3. Design The Table Top:
The next step in the construction will be to design a tabletop with right sides of the od facing upwards. It has been recommended to do the step on a flat surface because the tabletop will be as flat as the surface. Once the arrangement is done, the user needs to flip over each piece of wood in the same manner so that the bottom of the table will be facing upwards.
  4. Secure Table Top Pieces Together:
After that, the user needs to drill the pocket holes on to each wood piece and drive the screws inside the holes in order to secure all the pieces together. The user needs to repeat the step with the pieces of the leaves. The step almost completes the tabletop construction and the user needs to sand the whole surface using belt sander in order to get rid of horrible lumber print marks.
  5. Build The Frame:
The next step will be to build a base of the dining table starting by making the notches for the legs. The notches should be a little bigger than the crossbeams. The experts recommend having notches 3 ½” above the ground matching the thickness of crossbeams.
  6. Cut The Notches:
Once the notches are marked, the user needs to cut them down, start by raising the table saw blade to a little less tall equal to half the thickness of the leg equal to 1 5/8'. By doing this will let the wood to overreach the joined wood by about ¼” on each side. It is necessary to set the rip fence in order to keep the user from going far ahead up the leg. The user needs to cut the slice at either end of the notch followed by a cut after every ¼” will make the cutting a little easier.
  7. Repeat The Step On Other Legs:
The step needs to be repeated on each leg followed by knocking the slices off using a chisel. In order to smooth the notches, the user needs to carefully run the leg notches right to left and back & forth the running blade.
  8. Construct Crossbeams:
The crossbeams are constructed the same way as notches in which the user needs to notch out the ends along with the footrest space that goes across through the middle of the table legs between wider ends.
  9. Fix Crossbeams With Legs:
The next step in the process will be to drill pilot holes through crossbeams into legs using a 3/8' drill bit. Once the holes are constructed, the user needs to ratchet in the lag screws through the holes in order to fix crossbeams with the legs.
  10. Cut Some Notches In The Top Rails:
The next step will be to cut some notches in the top rails so that the leaves of the tabletop slide in easily. First, the user needs to mark the thickness of the rails and then follow it up with a 2×4 half-length cut. The cut should be far from the edges and the notches should be cut out as mentioned before.
  11. Attach Top Rails & Footrest With Legs:
After that, the user needs to attach the rails with legs using pocket hole screws. Also, the user needs to attach footrest with legs as well.
  12. Attach Side Rails With Legs:
In the next step, the user needs to attach the side rails with legs on a flat surface. Experts recommend using the tabletop as it would be the flattest surface around and made some to stand on it so that it remains steady while the user drills the pilot holes inside side rails and the legs. The recommended screws for the step are 6' lag screws.
  13. Attach Tabletop With The Base:
Once both the parts of the dining table are ready, the user needs to take the two pieces separately to the final destination where it has to be placed. Place a blanket on the floor followed by tabletop upside down and the table base upside down on top of the tabletop. The user then needs to attach two 2×4 supports across the frame and then center the frame on top of the table. Once centered, the brackets need to be attached to it with two brackets on the ends and three on the sides before putting the dining room table to use.
