How To Make A Chair Cushion With Foam: Steps To Make Cushion

Steps To Make A Chair Cushion With Foam

A chair cushion provides the user with a comfortable seating experience. Due to usage, the chair cushion may become flat & uncomfortable which is a clear indication that the cushion should be replaced. The user can make a chair cushion by self with foam by following the below-given steps:
  1. Measure Chair Seat:
The first step will be to measure the chair seat side by side. The side by side measurement will give the user an idea regarding the required width of the foam. It has been recommended by the experts to use 2" foam as it will give the user much better comfort. The user needs to add 6 inches to foam width in order to get the required width of the fabric. Also, the user needs to measure the seat from back to front in order to get the idea regarding the required length of the foam. The user needs to double the foam length and add an extra 6 inches to it in order to get the required length of the fabric needed for the project.
  2. Cut The Foam:
After that, the user needs to cut the foam as per the measurement by using shears. It has been recommended by the experts to draw the chair seat dimensions on a piece of paper or newspaper by using a marker & straight edge. Then, the user needs to cut the paper along the drawn lines and place it over the foam. After that, the foam should be cut in dimensions similar to the paper by using shears.
  3. Cut The Cushion Top & Bottom:
The next step is to cut the fabric as per the required dimensions. First, the user needs to fold the fabric in half making sure that the printed sides are facing each other. It has been recommended by the experts to pin down the corners in order to hold the fabric at a place. After that, the user needs to place the above-used paper over the fabric leaving 1/2 inch gap from the fold and the edge. The paper should also be pinned to the fabric in order to hold it at a place. Then, the user needs to draw lines around the fabric with a marker leaving a 1/2 inch gap from the other two sides. After that, the user needs to cut the fabric along the drawn lines including a cut in the fold as well. The cut-down pieces are used as the top and bottom of the cushion.
  4. Cut Cushions Sides:
After that, the user needs to cut the cushion sides by placing each side of the foam over the remaining fabric one by one. It has been recommended by the experts to draw traces of each foam side on the remaining fabric by leaving a 1/2 inch gap from all four sides. Then, the user needs to cut the fabric sides as per the drawn dimensions.
  5. Sew Cushion Sides:
Once the cushion sides are cut, the next step will be to sew them together. First, the user needs to pin the long side of the fabric with the short side and follow it up with another long side and short side. The user needs to make sure that he pins the printed sides together in a straight line. After that, the user needs to sew the pinned sides together by allowing the 1/2-inch fabric as a seam.
  6. Sew Cushion Sides With Cushion Top:
After that, the user needs to sew cushion sides with cushion top. First, the user needs to pin down cushion sides with the cushion top making sure the printed sides are attached together. Also, the user needs to make sure that he attaches the long and short parts of the cushion together for smooth processing. Then, the user needs to place the printed side of the fabric over the foam in order to be sure that the fabric fits perfectly. After that, the user needs to pin the open corner and if required, the user can make adjustments in the pins as well. Once the cushion top and sides are pinned, the user needs to sew them together allowing 1/2-inch fabric as a seam.
  7. Sew Cushion Bottom:
The next step will be to sew the cushion bottom with cushion sides. First, the user needs to pin the cushion bottom with cushion sides having printed along with long & short sides together. The user needs to leave 1/3 center of one side open through which foam can be slipped inside the cover. After that, the user needs to sew the bottom of the cushion with cushion sides allowing 1/2-inch fabric as a seam. Once sewed, the user needs to remove all the pins from the prepared fabric cover.
  8. Insert Foam & Sew The Opening:
After that, the user needs to turn the right side of the cover out and slip foam inside it through the center opening. The user needs to roll the foam so that it can slip inside the cover easily. Once the foam is slipped inside, the user needs to smooth it at the cushion corners. At last, the center opening of the cushion needs to be sewed by using a needle and thread.
