- Clean Rag & Stain
- Pre-Wood Conditioner

- Grit Sand Paper (80-, 120-, 220)
- Vacuum Cleaner
- Fine Tip Paint Brush
- Varnish
Step 1: Sand The Surface Of The Knotty Pine
First of all, take away the furniture that is adjacent to the knotty pine panel. Add or adhere 80-grit sandpaper to the sander before turning it on. Sand the knotty pine panel surface with the help of a handheld sander as long as the surface becomes even and regular, free from perceptible projections, lumps, or indentations. Using a sander is very convenient due to the reason that it helps you complete the job in half the time. After that, with the help of a damp rag, wipe & clean the surface of the dust. Sand the surface again with the help of 120-grit sandpaper in order to smoothen out the surface of the pine and get rid of the dust using a damp rag. Allow it to dry before sanding it again but this time using 220-grit sandpaper. This provides the pine very smooth surface and free from the previous stain that initially adhered to it. Vacuum-clean the sawdust from the floor and remove the small debris before moving to the next step.
Step 2: Apply The Pre-Wood Conditioner
With the help of a dry rag, put or spread a sufficient amount of pre-wood conditioner to the surface of the panels. This step is very important because it will help keep the stain from settling on the knotty pine panels. This will also help in preventing the pine from looking blotchy or streaked with the passage of time. Allow the wood conditioner set in for at least 15 minutes or more before you wipe it with the help of dry clean rags.
Step 3: Apply Stain On The Surface Of The Pine Panel
Now, with the help of a paintbrush or a clean rag, put or spread light stain on the surface of the pine panels. When you apply the stain, it is important to work in small sections of the panel as you need to get rid of the stain that you have applied after 15 minutes. Make sure to note the time before getting rid of the stain so that it will result in a uniform stain on the pine panel. It is important to keep in mind that the longer the stain remains on the wood, the darker your panels become. Allow it to dry for nearly 8 hours.
Step 4: Apply A Coat Of Varnish To The Surface
As soon as the stain has dried, put or spread a thin coat of varnish to the surface and then allow it to dry for a few hours. Sand the surface using 220-grit sandpaper, before removing the debris & then apply the second coat of varnish. Allow the coat to dry for nearly two hours and ensure that the surface is no longer sticky before you take your furniture back in.
