Simple Instructions To Put Wood Rails On A Concrete Porch

An elegant touch is added by mounting a wooden railing on a concrete porch. The fact that wood does not rust and is simple to remove or replace are two reasons why so many people prefer wooden railings to iron ones. It's a simple task that you ought to be able to complete in under a day. It is not possible to put a wood porch railing directly onto the concrete porch. However, solid metal post holders can be used to secure it. It is preferable to have hardwood porch railings rather than metal ones that corrode from dampness. This kind of railing is very simple to take apart and repair if it wears out or gets too damaged.

Tools And Materials Needed

  • Wood Porch Railing Kit
  • Drill And Concrete Bit
  • Metal Post Holders (With 4 To 6-Inch Sleeves)
  • Socket Wrench & Concrete Bolt
  • Washers, Tape measure & Hammer
  • Wooden Block, Paint & Paintbrush

Step 1: Plan The Installation

  • The wood porch railing components ought to fit the porch's edges and leave room for the entry. Additionally, the posts for the railing should be able to be adjusted to fit every porch corner.
  • Railings can be purchased already made or built by a skilled woodworker. Make sure to measure the porch's dimensions if you intend to build the railing yourself to ensure a perfect fit.
  • Place the post holders at each intersection. Each post should be placed in accordance with the wooden posts on the rails, not the other way around.

Step 2: Install The Post Holders

  • Mark each of the four bolt holes with a pencil or marker while the post holders are in their proper places. Temporarily remove the post holders. Put a concrete bit in the drill to get it ready.
  • To match the size of the bolt, the bit's size must be accurate. For accurate drilling directions, consult the bolt manufacturer's manual. Place the holders back in their original location after drilling all of the holes.
  • The bolts should be put into the corresponding holes using a socket wrench. Put a washer between the bolt and the holder first before continuing. One by one, firmly insert each bolt into its respective hole.
  • Before moving on to the next holder, make sure the current one is securely fastened to the concrete. If it is still shaky, do not proceed on to the following step. Ensure that each post holder is in the proper place.

Step 3: Install The Railings

  • To the holders, insert each wooden post. If it is too tight, cut the wood a little. If required, place a wood block on top of the post and hammer it into the holder. Make sure that each post is level with the others. Verify that all posts are firmly attached to the holders by doing a second inspection of the installation.
  • Top and bottom rails should be placed between the posts, and 2.5-inch galvanized screws should be used to attach them to each post. While you insert the screws, have assistants hold the rails steadily. Make careful to insert 2 galvanized screws into the posts from the top of each rail. Before painting, conduct one last examination.

Step 4: Paint Both Wood And Metal Pieces

  • To prepare them for painting, clean and sand the metal holders and hardwood rails. Apply a water- and UV-resistant finishing coat after priming all metal and wood surfaces with a premium primer.
