How To Install Undermount Drawer Slides: Step By Step Process Of Installation

Step By Step Process Of Installation Of Undermount Drawer Slides

Undermount drawer slides are actually the bevel bearing slides that come particularly in pairs. These types of slides are mostly used to connect to the locking devices. These locking devices are mainly attached to the drawer underside. Some of the undermount drawer slides include Blum Undermount Soft Close Drawer Slides, Knape and Vogt 8400P, etc. The under-mount drawer slides are designed for drawers which have the little clearance between the sides of the cabinet carcase and the drawer. The step by step process of installing under-mount drawer slides is mentioned below:
  • Flip: Flip the drawer upside down to receive the drawer slides and position the drawer in a way so that the face of the drawer is opposite the body of the user. Put the left front of the mounting bracket of slides flat on the drawer bottom right in the upper left corner, on the front as well as the left side of the drawer box. Screw down the mounting bracket on the front and on the sides of the drawer with 4 mounting screws with a power drill having a screw tip. Repeat the same process with the right side of the front mounting bracket.
  • Measure Width: With the help of measurement tape measure down the width of the drawer slide assembly. After that put the tip of the tape all along the lower-left corner of the drawer, and then measure this distance all along at the top edge of the back of the drawer, and mark. Extend this mark all along the edge and down the face of the back of the drawer box.
  • Measure Distance: The user needs to measure the distance from the edge down to the drawer bottom. Transfer the measurement on the face of the drawer back on both the left as well as right sides. Then place the square all along the left edge on the drawer back, and then make a line that must be parallel to the bottom on across the back edge until this line meets the previously created line. These 2 perpendicular lines will help to outline a notch that is needed to cut in the back of the drawer for attaching the drawer glide. Also, make a similar perpendicular mark for another side.
  • Cut Notches: With the help of a jigsaw cut out the 2 notches on the back of the drawer. It is important that the long edge of the notches must be flush with the bottom of the drawer.
  • Mark: Put the left-side drawer slide in the place in-between the front bracket and notch that is in the back of the drawer. Look for the pin that is on the back of the drawer slide, and make a mark on the drawer back for the pinhole location that is to be drilled. Also mark for the right-side pinhole.
  • Drill: Taka a drill and attach a 1/4-inch drill bit then drill a shallow hole to accommodate the pin at the 2 marked locations.
  • Level: Put a level on the opening for the drawer. If needed adjust the back edge of the level simply up or down until it is levelled, and then draw a pencil mark on the back of the carcase with the bottom edge of the level. Repeat the same on the right side of the carcass.
  • Measurement: Take a measurement of the left side of the carcase straight to the front side left edge of the drawer opening. After that, transfer this measurement on the back of the cabinet, make a mark right on the back of the carcase, this mark is for the inset position of the rear mounting bracket. Again repeat the same job for the right-side bracket.
  • Mounting Bracket: Place the left rear mounting bracket with the back of carcase and the bottom edge of the bracket must be aligned with the pencil mark and align the left edge of the bracket to the left pencil mark. With the help of mounting screws secure the bracket on the back of the carcase. Repeat for right-side.
  • Secure: Place the left side drawer slide in the carcase and then push the back of the slide on the tab of the mounting bracket. Secure the front left edge of the slide with the side of the drawer using a pair of mounting screws. Perform the same pattern for another side.
  • Extend: Extend both drawer slides out of the carcase. Place the drawer on the drawer glides. Put the hand under the left of the drawer and then slide the left drawer slides in the forward direction so that it clicks in the front mounting bracket. Check underneath the back edge of the drawer to determine that the pin on the back of the slides has slid into the pinhole. Perform the same step for the right side, then check the working of drawer.
