How To Install Sliding Shelves In Kitchen Cabinets: Steps And Items Needed

The sliding shelves will make your base cabinets more approachable. It's more favorable to pull out a large shelf than to reach back & try to lift heavy objects from the back of your cabinet. The sliding shelves can be installed in almost any type of cabinet by using the full-extension drawer glides. This type of guide can also be installed on top of an existing shelf without removing it. After installation, your shelf will pull completely out of your cabinet & support up to 75 pounds.

Steps And Items Needed To Install Sliding Shelves In Kitchen Cabinets

If you want to install sliding shelves in kitchen cabinets by yourself then you just need to gather all the required items and go through all the given steps carefully. Here is the list of required items and steps for this process:

Items Needed

  • Fir Plywood & Table Saw
  • Oak Lumber, 1/4-By-1 1/2-By-24-Inches
  • Miter Saw & Glue
  • Pin Nailer & 1-Inch Pin Nails
  • 18-Inch Full-Extension Guides
  • Poplar Sticks, 3/4-By-1-By-24-Inches
  • Cordless Screwgun
  • 3/16-Inch Drill Bit
  • 3/4-Inch Screws

Steps For This Process

  • First of all, you need to measure the distance betwixt the vertical boards of your cabinet opening where you wish to install your shelf & subtract 1/2-inch. Now you need to measure the depth of your shelf on the inside & subtract 1/2-inch.
  • Now you need to cut a piece of plywood on your table saw to the taken measurement. For example, if the 2 measurements are 16-by-18-inches then you need to cut a piece of plywood 15 1/2-by-17 1/2-inches.
  • Next you need to cut your 1/4-inch oak to 15 1/2-inches on a miter saw. You need to run a bead of glue on the back & nail it to the front edge of your shelf by using a pin nailer & 1-inch pin nails. This step is to contain items on your shelf.
  • Then you need to place your shelf flat on a worktable. There will be marks on all of your runners at the front. Simply place your runner marked "DL" on the left side of your shelf. Place your runner marked, "DR" on the other side of your shelf. Simply flush them with the end of your shelf. By using a cordless gun & 3/4-inch screws, simply screw them to the sides of your shelf using the holes in your shelf. The runners will extend past the end of your shelf slenderly, that's fine.
  • Now you have to cut 2 pieces of the 3/4-inch poplar boards to 17 1/2-inches. Then you need to drill 4 holes evenly spaced down through with the top of your both boards by using a cordless gun & 3/16-inch drill bit.
  • Next you need to place your poplar boards on a worktable with the holes which are facing up. Simply place your runner marked "CL" along one side of one of your board flush with the end. Place your runner marked "CR" on your other board. Screw the runners to your boards by using the cordless gun and 3/4-inch screws.
  • Now you need to fit your runners together. There will be small bearings on the ends of your shelf runners. Simply place them into slots on your board runners. The board's runners will easily glide along the edges of your shelf as you move them by hand to test them.
  • Finally you need to place your shelf with the board runners that are already attached, inside your cabinet opening. Flush it with your front shelf. Now you need to place screws in the holes that you drilled earlier. Screw in the screws gently with the help of a cordless screw gun. Test your shelf & if it glides in & out smoothly then you need to finish tightening your screws. If it binds or rubs then you need to tap your runners in the direction needed & retest until your shelf glides smoothly in & out of your cabinet.
