How To Install Overlay Cabinet Hinges: 6 Easy Steps Of Installing Overlay Cabinet Hinges

6 Easy Steps And Items Needed For Installing Overlay Cabinet Hinges

If you are going to install overlay cabinet hinges then you need to collect all the required items first before going through all the mentioned steps carefully. Here is the list of required items & steps for this process:

Items Needed

  • Tape Measure & Pencil
  • Screws, 5/8-Inch
  • Drill/Driver
  • Magnetic Phillips Tip, No. 9
  • Screwdriver

Steps For This Process

  1. First of all, you need to place your cabinet door face-down on a flat surface. You need to measure down from the top corner & then make a mark at 2 inches. Measure up from the bottom corner & make a mark at 2 inches.
  2. Now, place the larger plate of your hinge flat on your door with the top corner flush on the marked area. Flush your bottom hinge with the bottom marked area. Push your hinges gently against the edge of your door to flush your cylinder with the edge of your door to square the hinges. 90-degree lip or edge of your small plate will be facing up.
  3. Next you need to place one, 5/8-inch screw on the tip of your drill/driver equipped with a No. 9 Phillips driver tip. Now drive your screw moderately tight into one of the drilled holes on the plate for securing your hinge to the back of your door. Do this with both hinges in the same way.
  4. You need to tap your hinge as needed with the handle of your screwdriver by your hand to square your cylinder with the side of your door. Drive the screws into all of the leftover holes in your hinge plate. Tighten them all firmly.
  5. You need to place your door on the cabinet opening. The 90-degree lip on your hinges needs to be fit tight against the side of your cabinet face frame. Adjust your door up or down so your door overlays the opening equitably on the top & bottom. The side-to-side adjustment already has been entrenched by your hinge.
  6. Finally, open your door to expose the holes in your 90-degree lip. Screw the lip to your cabinet face frame by using 5/8-inch screws in the drilled holes in your lip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't tighten the screws separately. You need to tighten them collectively, a bit at a time. If you need to adjust the hinges then you need to tap your door or hinge & then retighten all screws.
  • Before buying hinges, just be sure that your doors are sized for 1/2-inch hinges. Your door should measure 1/2 inch bigger than your cabinet opening on 4 sides. Here is an example, if your door measures only 3/8 inch bigger on four sides & you need 3/8-inch hinges rather of 1/2 inch.
  • Many 1/2-inch overlay hinges available in oval-shaped holes on its plates that are used for the hinge adjustment. Choose them for the best results.
