How To Install Gutter Flashing: Proper Procedure Of Installing Roof Gutter Apron Flashing

A gutter apron is another name for gutter flashing. Over a drip edge, gutter flashing offers greater protection. It has a larger surface area and completely encloses the fascia. Rainwater is kept out of contact with the fascia boards thanks to it. Water will seep in between the fascia and the gutter in the absence of flashing. The dampness will, at the very least, cause early deterioration of the fascia boards. The worst-case scenario is that water will seep through the inside walls. Gutter flashing is essential for maximum protection in stormy, wet climates like the Delaware Valley.

Proper Procedure Of Installing Roof Gutter Apron Flashing

Gutter flashing is slid under the shingles and fixed on the peak of the roof close to the house's eave. There are several width options and 12-foot lengths for the gutter flashing. It is a solid sheet that has already been pre-formed to fit beneath the shingles and over the gutter below the roof line. It aids in directing rainwater down the gutter and shields the fascia and soffit from water damage. One of the final phases in installing gutters is installing gutter flashing.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape Measure
  • Ladder
  • Roofing Nails
  • Hammer
  • Pencil
  • Tin Snips

Step 1: Measure All The Sides Of The Roof Line Of The House

With a tape measure, measure the roof line of the home on each side, and then note the measurements. The total number of feet is equal to the sum of the four sides. To determine how many pieces of flashing are required for installation, divide that number by 12. In order to account for the irregular lengths of the cuts that will be made, add an extra piece to your total.

Step 2: Pull Back The Shingles At The Roof's Corner

Place a ladder on the ground in any room's corner. Climb the ladder, then manually pull back the shingles at the roof's corner. Pull aside every single shingle as you proceed down the first side. If required, adjust the ladder's position.

Step 3: Nail The Bent Side Of The Flashing Over The Gutter

With a hammer, drive a 1-inch roofing nail every 16 inches along the center of the gutter flashing from the ribbed end that has been slid underneath the shingles. At the same 16-inch intervals throughout the length of the piece, nail the bent side of the flashing over the gutter.

Step 4: Overlap The Second Piece By Four Inches, And Nail It Down At The Overlap

Place nails where the second piece overlaps by four inches. Until you reach the end of the wall, assemble the second piece as well as all the other pieces from the first side in the same way. If a cut is necessary to make the finished piece fit, measure and record the cut line with a tape measure and pencil. A 4-inch overlap from the edge of the last length of flashing should be included in the measurement for the finished piece.

Step 5: Cut The Final Piece To Size With Tin Snips

Tin snips are used to trim the last piece to size. Continually follow the pencil mark. In the same way, attach the last component of the first side. Utilizing roofing nails, reinstall the shingles. Repeat the procedure for each of the house's sides before moving on to the next side.
