How To Install Fence Rails: Installation Process Of Fence Rails Using Screws & Hangers

The rails may be placed at different heights, which is totally dependent on the style of the fence. As soon as you confirm the style of fence that you are going to build, you will be able to ascertain or establish the location of the rails. Generally, the top rail is put down 7-8” from the uppermost part of the fence & the underside rail is 7-8” from the grade. And the middle rail is put down even betwixt the top and bottom rails. Do not position your rails any further from either the uppermost part or the underside of the fence. Cedar is less likely to bow as compared to the treated or pine materials, however, it will still bow if not held gently in place. As soon as the concrete has become harder around the posts, you are ready to rail your wood fence.

Easy Installation Process Of Fence Rails Using Screws & Hangers

The fence rails are regarded as the diagonal members that link the fence posts and support the vertical picket or privacy fence boards. Start the installation process by setting square fence posts 8 feet distant from the center. Two parallel rails are enough for fences that are relatively small than 4 feet. Three rails are ideal for taller fences as well as for heavier privacy fences.

Installing Fence Rails With Screws

  • Calculate and mark up from the underside of each fence post for the location of the underneath edge of the lower rail. Make the marks on the side of the fence positioning away from your property.
  • Now, calculate from the center on the front face of one fence post to the center on the front face of the next post. Trim a piece of 2 by 4-inch or 2 by 6-inch lumber to that length with the help of a circular saw.
  • Next, secure & fix that rail to the fence posts by putting down two No. 8 galvanized 2 1/2-inch deck screws along each end of the rails as well as into the post.
  • Calculate and trim the remaining lower rails. Push the ends of the lumber together. Affix & fasten the rails with two deck screws in each end.
  • Now, calculate from the top of each fence post where you are going to install the top edge of the top rail and mark the posts. It can be a similar measurement as from the underneath edge, or it can be a different amount.
  • Calculate and trim the top rails. Secure & fix them as you did the bottom rails with the help of deck screws. Push end joints together in the middle of each post.
  • Measure the distance betwixt the underside of the top rail and the top of the underneath rail. Add 2 inches to the taken measurement if you are using 2 by 4s and add 3 inches for 2 by 6s. This strongly suggests where you want to position the top edge of the middle rail. Mark that gap on all the posts.
  • Finally, calculate and trim the wood for the middle rails. Secure & fix them as you did with the top as well as the bottom rails.

Installing Fence Rails With Hangers

  • Firstly, calculate and mark the height of each rail on the inner side of each post.
  • Secondly, attach rail hangers to the posts with the underside of the U shape facing down, with the help of the longer screws that come with the hangers.
  • Finally, trim the rails to fit betwixt the posts. Move the rails smoothly into the U-shaped hangers. Affix the wood to the hangers using shorter screws from the hanger assembly kits.
