How To Install Felt Paper On Wall Sheathing: 5 Easy Steps Of Installing Felt Paper On Wall Sheathing

5 Easy Steps Of Installing Felt Paper On Wall Sheathing

Felt paper on wall sheathing will help you in providing a moisture barrier betwixt the sheathing and any material you select for covering the wall. If such a barrier could not be there, then it is highly possible that the sheathing could absorb moisture whenever it rains, which in turn allows the liquid to seep through as well as damage your home’s interior, and rotting the sheathing material itself. The installation process of felt paper is an easy task, though, with the majority of DIYers able to handle the process themselves. All you need is careful placement of the felt on all outside surfaces as well as around the windows, before fixing it in place using roofing nails. From there, you can fix or secure the covering of your choice, be it siding, brick or veneer. In order to install felt paper on wall sheathing, go through the below-mentioned 5 easy steps carefully:
  1. Measure The Width & Height Of Wall Sheathing: First of all, calculate or compute the width as well as the height of the wall sheathing, with the help of a tape measure. Cut the felt paper with the help of a utility knife in order to fit the taken calculations. When it comes to multiple sheets, you need to add 6 inches to the paper width for overlaying at the felt paper seams.
  2. Set First Sheet Of Felt Paper Against Wall Sheathing: Now, place the first sheet of felt paper against the wall sheathing, starting at the right side of a wall. Fix or attach the paper to the wall, with the help of roofing nails. Position the first nail in the top leftmost corner of the sheet roughly 2 inches from the edges of the paper, and using a hammer, drive it through the felt paper and into the sheathing material. Place extra nails in the paper in a row extending downward with each new nail positioned every 6 inches.
  3. Secure The Entire Sheet Of Paper: Next, move to the right 6 inches and set another row of nails in order to secure the paper. Continue with a new row every 6 inches as long as you have covered the entire sheet of paper, & make sure to stop 2 inches from the lower right hand corner of the sheet.
  4. Secure The Felt Row By Row: Position the next sheet over & above the first with an overlap of 6 inches at the seam. Continue with the mounting process using the roofing nails, as long as you reach the top of the wall, before placing the next row of sheets to the left of the first with an extra 6-inch overlap. Secure the felt row by row as long as you reach the end of the wall on the left.
  5. Cut The Felt To Create 4-inch Flaps: Finally, cut the felt in order to create 4-inch flaps for window the openings. Position the flaps around the window, putting them down carefully from the outside of the opening inward. Slit the flaps at the corners of the windows in order to make sure that they lie flat in place.
