Step By Step Instructions For Installing Copper Countertops

Step By Step Instructions

  1. First of all, take the measurement of the tops of the cabinets, where you want to install the countertops, with the help of a tape measure. Cut around 3/4-inch plywood in order to adjust the dimensions of your cabinets using a circular saw. Make sure to leave one inch of overhang around the plywood on all the exposed edges.
  2. The next step is to adjust the plywood on top of the cabinets and then press around 3-inch deck screws through the plywood into the cabinet frame. Secure the plywood to the cabinet frame every 6 inches.
  3. After that, cut the copper sheets with the help of metal shears in order to make sure that the copper will be fixed over the edge of the plywood by 1¾ inch. This will let the copper sheet to turn around the 3/4-inch-thick plywood and leave one inch under the lip of the counter for affixing the copper sheet.
  4. Now, put in the polyurethane-based adhesive into a caulk gun. Apply the adhesive on the top of the plywood, but keep in mind to cover the edges also using the glue. Only polyurethane-based adhesives are regarded as one of the safe adhesives to use with copper.
  5. Next, place the copper sheet on top of the plywood so that it gets fixed over the top of the plywood by around 1 3/4 inch on each exposed side. Secure the copper to the plywood using C-clamps and allow the glue to dry for one complete night.
  6. Take hold of the edge of the copper sheet with the help of pliers. Turn the copper over the edge of the plywood, with the help of the pliers as leverage. Cut the corners using metal shears in order to make the folded corners neat. Press copper screws from under the counter through the copper sheet and into the plywood, with the help of a screwdriver.
  7. Finally, soak a soft cloth into beeswax. Make the wax smooth into the counter in order to seal the copper before cleaning it with the help of a soft, dry cloth.
