How To Install Beadboard Ceiling Over Popcorn: Installation Process Of Bead Board Over Popcorn Ceiling

Installation Process Of Bead Board Over Popcorn Ceiling

Popcorn ceilings are the one feature that quickly ages a house. They stand out even more than other portions of the same room since the textured ceiling is frequently one of the most prominent, uninterrupted surfaces in the space. A popcorn ceiling can be easily updated to a timeless aesthetic by covering it with traditional bead board paneling. Even one afternoon will be plenty to finish this task.

Things You Will Need

  • Stud Finder & Primer
  • Paint & Chalk-Line Tool
  • Paintbrush & Laser Level
  • Hammer & Jigsaw
  • Finishing Nails

Step 1: Prime The Bead Board & Find the Joists

Each piece of bead board paneling you intend to install should be primed on both sides. In the event of a leak, priming both sides helps stop moisture from penetrating through the boards. Before you attach the boards, paint or finish the side that will be seen. Give the paint time to cure completely. To find the joists, run a stud finder across the ceiling. Bead board must be put in place parallel to the joists. Once you've found the joists, quickly mark their locations with a chalk line tool.

Step 2: Ensure The Board Is Parallel

Position the first board against a wall on the ceiling. Check sure the board is parallel to the wall across the room using a laser level. If not, slightly adjust the board until it is; any gap will be concealed by molding where the bead board meets the wall.

Step 3: Nail The Board To The Joists

The tongue of the bead board should be facing away from the wall as you nailed the boards to the joists at an angle. The nails must be 16 inches apart since joists are normally spaced every 16 inches (some are 24 inches apart). By inserting more nails through the board's face, fasten the board's edge that faces the wall to the ceiling. The only boards that need to be nailed in this manner are the ones that are inserted at the start and end of each row; all other boards are nailed through the tongues.

Step 4: Add The Next Board & Cut Around Light Fixtures

By placing the tongue of the installed panel over the grooved edge of the following board, the board is placed in position. Fix the board with nails. It is highly advised to use a jigsaw to cut the boards so that they may fit around any light fittings or other obstructions. Mark the location of the section that needs to be cut while holding the bead board up against the ceiling. Make the incision, then remove and install the board.

Step 5: Attach The Molding

Using a jigsaw, trim the final bead board pieces so that they will fit on the opposite end of the ceiling. To conceal the edge of the bead board, nail up a shoe, ogee, or other decorative molding around the perimeter of the ceiling.
