Easy Steps & Items Needed To Install An Electrical Outlet In A Kitchen Island

The Kitchen islands usually offer the extra counter space in the kitchen areas. Many high-grade kitchen islands also offer the cooking surface and the sink areas and the normal typical islands are having the countertop and the cabinet areas. By adding the electric outlet to the kitchen island, the users can add more functionality to it and they can easily install it by gathering the below-mentioned materials and then following the below-described steps:

Materials Required

  • Measuring Tape, Screwdriver & Wire Stripper
  • 12-Gauge Wire & Cordless Drill
  • 1/8-Inch Drill Bit
  • 3/4-Inch Wood-Boring Drill Bit
  • Jigsaw, Pencil, Ruler & GFCI kit

Steps

  • Measurement: Start by measuring the width and the length of the container box and to do so use the pencil and the ruler as the straightedge and then draw the rectangle over the kitchen island wall where the users want to install the outlet.
  • Trim The Hole: Then trim the hole in the kitchen island wall by using the jigsaw as the jigsaw blade allows the users to trim their hole exactly on the cabinet side and then discard that trimmed wood.
  • Find Out The Electric Circuit: The users then need to locate their closet electric circuit in the kitchen area as they will want to confront the dedicated circuits like the dishwasher, stove and also the microwave circuit. Instead of this, they need to locate the closet receptacle and then calculate the distance between the new outlet and the circuit and then maximize near about five feet to deal with all the bends or the turns. Then the users need to trim the calculated wire amount so as to use it for the project by using the electric pliers.
  • Place The Trimmed Wire: Then they need to open the doors of the kitchen island and then drill up a hole directly into the floor beneath where the users want to place the breaker box. Then they need to place the trimmed wire directly to the hole and then direct this wire to the old circuit that they are using. Then they need to drill up the hole directly into the floor beneath this electrical circuit and fix this wire back through. They also need to drill within any joists of the floor in between these two electrical circuits.
  • Turn Off The Main Power: Then the users need to turn off the power of the house by simply flipping the chief switch off. The users will find this switch either at the circuit breaker box top or they will find the lever to its side and this eventually cut off the power to the entire dwelling.
  • Strip The Wire End: Then they need to strip the 8 inches of the sheathing from one wire end so as to expose its inside wire. The GFCI kit packing will usually instruct the users how much wire they need to strip off but usually two inches typical.
  • Place The Receptacle Box: Then they need to place the receptacle box directly into the drilled hole of the kitchen island and then mark down the screw area by using the pencil. Then detach the box and drill up the holes within the marked area by using the 1/8 inch bit. Then screw up the box to the kitchen island respectively.
  • Pull The Wire: Then they need to pull up the wire within that receptacle box by leaving near about eight inches hanging down. Then they need to slide down the black colored wire directly into the brass-toned fitting at the GFCI outlet back and then fasten it by using the brass screws and the screwdriver. Then insert down the white-colored wire directly into the silver-toned fitting and then fasten it by using the sliver screw. Then affix the green-colored wire with the ground screw on the outlet side and then fasten it accordingly.
  • Affix The Breaker: Then they need to affix the breaker with the box by using the closed screws. The mounts that are present in the breaker at the base and the top outlet. Then affix the faceplate at the outlet front.
  • Detach The Switch Plate: Then the users need to feed the other wire end in the active receptacle box and to do so they need to detach the switch plate and the outlet from the mount and then straight the nuts of the wire connecting up the wire directly in the conducted box. Then twist and place up the black-toned wire altogether by using the wire nut and then repeat the same procedure with the white-colored wires. Then they need to twist off the ground wire on the ground screw of the outlet.
  • Turn On The Main Power: Finally switch on the main power of the house and then use the outlet tester so as to check each and every plug to make sure that the power is being transported safely.
